Jets Grab Mario Urrutia Off Waivers

...from the Bengals

Ok, so he's no Plaxico Burress, but the Jets figure they've got nothing to lose in going after wideout Mario Urrutia. They have put a waiver claim in on the former Bengals receiver, a seventh-round pick (246th overall) in 2008.

Urrutia, 6-6, 232, was released by Cincy last Aug. 30 and signed to the team's practice squad the next day. He spent the entire season on the practice squad and was subsequently released.

During his college career at Louisville, Urrutia had 130 catches for 2,271 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Height is a luxury in a receiver. All it really does is provide the quarterback a bigger target, particularly useful in the red zone. It doesn't make up for route running and hands. The jury is still out on Urrutia in both of these areas. I guess the Jets figure the more guys they stick at the position, the better the odds they find somebody who pans out.
