Leon Washington suggested yesterday he could be a holdout in training camp if he does not have a new contract by then.
"No decision for training camp," Washington said, according to a transcript of his interview provided by the Jets' media relations department. "I will wait until that time comes around and we will see how everything goes. I have to talk to my agent and the Jets but there is no decision yet. I think it's important for me to be at training camp, and hopefully I can be there."
It's kind of surprising the Jets have not dealt with the Washington situation already. There was no real urgency. It might be a good idea to make this the top priority before things get ugly.
Leon is right. He deserves to get paid. A lot of people talk about how he's a unique player. The reason he's unique is he can dominate a game without many touches. It's not that he's incapable of carrying a bigger load.
If he wants top running back money, the Jets should give it to him and hand him the ball like he is the featured back. Getting the best player on the team as many touches as possible just seems like common sense.
