Cowher NOT Interested in Browns or Coaching in '09?

source: cleveland.com

Browns owner Randy Lerner said today that former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher told him he was not interested in joining the Browns.

This is really no surprise considering Cowhers Steeler roots. By going to the Browns, he would forever tarnish his image in Pittsburgh.

Cowher went on to say that he was quite comfortable with his currrent position.

Speculation for his replacement had been centered on Cowher for several weeks, but Lerner said Monday that he met with Cowher on Saturday night and that Cowher said he would not return to coaching in 2009 and asked Lerner to take him off the Browns list of candidates.

Cowher told Lerner that he was comfortable with his lifestyle in North Carolina at this time

If you were looking for some glimmer of hope that Cowher may be coaching next year, you may find it here:

"I got word that he was available for an informal conversation because he was very aware I had him at the top of the list, getting involved with the Browns," Lerner said. "He wanted to tell me personally that he did not anticipate coaching in 2009.

Just because Cowher does not "anticipate" coaching doesn't mean he will not. The first team to attempt to court him also happens to be a rival of the city and the team where he is considered a legend. Given enough money, staff and team control, i believe the opportunity to coach a New York team could be too enticing to pass up.

JETMAN!

Thank you for taking the time to read about my story. My name is Robert Fulmer and I am currently in the running for an opportunity of a lifetime. The NFL and Samsung is running a contest called "That’s How I see It". The winner receives a trip for 2 to the SuperBowl and the opportunity to be in a commercial featuring them which will run during the big game. The film crew went around the country in the fall filming thousands of fans as they told "their" special stories about who they were and why they felt they deserved to win. Narrowed down by the NFL and the public vote-I now find myself among just 9 finalists!!

Here is my story:

I am 36 years old and have been a die hard NYJ fan my entire life. I grew up in NJ and have sinced moved to the Lakes Region in New Hampshire. The move has done nothing to deter my passion for the NYJ's. When I decided to ask my wife to marry me, I knew she needed to be completely informed about my "first" love. At dinner one night I presented her with a contract stating that 8 Sundays in the fall/winter-every year, no matter what, I was unavailable. Regardless of the situation, weddings, births, funerals-if something was planned on the same day as a NYJ home game-I would not be able to attend. She agreed, and has supported me now in our marriage, with my passion for the last 8 years. Now, every Sunday-I pack up my trailer, transform myself into JETMAN and take the 6 hour trip to East Rutherford New Jersey. Some people might not understand this-but my passion is true and I cant tell you how much this opportunity means to me.

The contest runs from today through January 4th, 2009. Public vote and support are a huge factor in who wins the final prize. I am hoping that you consider giving me the opprtunity to share my story and give one final push for votes by giving me a few minutes on a future segment of your show. Please check out the following link so you can see for yourself what I am all about and what NFL films has decided is one in the top nine out of thousands of entries!!

www.nfl.com/howiseeit

Thank you,

Q & A With Seahawks Fan...SSreporters

Greeting Jets fans. I'm SSreporters and I've been a long time SB Nation member/commenter. While I don't run an SB Nation blog I do run my own website which you can see here.

Enough of that, this week is the final week of my Q & A session because the Seahawks are not playing football in the post season......and they're barely playing football in the regular season. It's Mike Holmgren's final home game as Seahawks coach and it's against FAVRE!

The forecast as of now (believe it or not) is snow showers and temperatures in the high 20s to low 30s. It's been snowing/icy all week long and it should make for interesting football.

Good luck to the Jets this weekend as well as the rest of the season, start firing away your questions and I'll see what I can do. ;-)

Bills/Jets Q&A with Buffalo Rumblings

Hey Gang Green Nation,

Brian Galliford from Buffalo Rumblings here. Johnny B and I decided to swap some FanPosts for a little Q&A regarding the Bills, the Jets, and their upcoming "football game" this weekend.

I say "football game" laced with sarcasm because I haven't seen the Bills play actual football in around two months. Sure, we beat a JV Chiefs team, but other than that, we're 0-6 since Week 7. In short: the Bills suck. They're one of eight teams to be 2-7 or worse after Week 4 this season. The other teams? Detroit (0-13), Cincinnati (1-11-1), Kansas City (2-11), St. Louis (2-11), Seattle (2-11), Oakland (3-10) and Jacksonville (4-9). Five of Buffalo's six wins have come against teams in that putrid group (SEA, JAX, OAK, STL, KC). Our sixth win came against the 5-8 and horribly underachieving Chargers. Well played, Buffalo. Well played.

So if you want to ask questions about why the Bills suck, or just how thoroughly the Jets are going to annihilate Buffalo this weekend, this is the spot to do it. Looking forward to another high draft pick!

Niners Nation Q&A

What's happening Jets fans? This is Fooch from Niners Nation. We're exchanging FanPosts so feel free to fire your questions away and I'll do my best to answer them. Also, I'm going to encourage my own readers to come over and answer your questions as well, just to give you a more diverse set of viewpoints. If you get a free moment, feel free to head over to John's FanPost and discuss your Jets.

Before I start answering questions, I thought I'd give you guys a quick update on where the 49ers stand this season. The team is 4-8 and only barely in playoff contention (Arizona has to lose out, 49ers have to win out). Mike Nolan was fired and the promotion of Mike Singletary has brought a bit of a spark to this team.

The promotion of Singletary led to the promotion of Shaun Hill as starting QB, following J.T. "Just Turnovers" O'Sullivan's less than stellar performances. Hill brings less of the high reward, but he does bring a lot less of the high risk. The offense has shown improvement under Hill as they've become more consistent. They'll certainly need that when Brett Favre comes to town.

The defense has gotten a lot of flack, but they really stepped up against the Bills last week. They bent a considerable amount but absolutely shut down the Bills in the red zone. Two missed field goals certainly helped, but keeping the Bills out of the end zone was of equal importance.

So, the 49ers may not appear to be playing for much, but in reality, Singletary needs some Ws to get the full time job. The players have responded to him and should bring a stiff challenge (that's what she said) for the Jets. Brett Favre had quite a bit of success against the 49ers while in Green Bay, so we'll see if it carries over to this Sunday.

So with that, I open the floor for your questions. Fire away.

Consistently,Inconsistent

Moved to front page. It's always good for somebody to bring some perspective after a brutal loss. -John B

The New York Jets have once again misled their fans and confused NFL followers nationwide. Sitting down for Thanksgiving dinner with your family in the New Jersey area, you were bound to hear at least twice about the potential Super Bowl match up between the Jets and Giants. This was an immediate reaction after seeing the Jets slay the undefeated 10-0 Titans rather convincingly. But my oh my have those talks seemed to have quieted less then a week later, after the Jets were rolled on by Jay Cutler and the Denver Broncos. But the question is, where do The New York Jets truly stand?

From what I have seen throughout the year from the New York Jets it is pretty clear where they stand in the AFC. And that is as a Super Bowl contender. I hate hearing knee jerk reactions from the media and fans after every single game. Yes, we all know how big every game can be in the NFL, but look at the big picture for the Jets. They have proven they have what it takes to win the big game, as shown in Tennessee and New England. Yes, they also have shown they can lay an egg at any moment too, and some people say it’s the sign of a bad team, if you play down to your competition. But I see it more like, it’s the NFL and upsets are going to happen on any given Sunday. Plus usually there are no bad teams in the playoffs, so the Jets fans wont have to have that worry on their conscience all January. But when skimming through the AFC anyone is beatable. There is no team without flaws and the Jets have the pieces to get to the promise land.

The Jets are still in control of their own destiny with a 1 game lead in their division and 2 division games remaining with both being home and the other two games vs. lowly NFC west opponents, they seem to be locks for the playoffs. On top of that they have Brett Favre leading them and the game breaking Leon Washington becoming one of the best playmakers in the NFL. The department of the team that worries me the most though is the defense. Kris Jenkins has proven that he can shut down a run game, but I have seen the secondary get passed all over much too much this season. The New York Jets are ranked 30th in pass defense in the NFL, giving up 249 yards through the air a game. That is despicable. There is no excuse for that, and some seem to blame that on the cautious defensive play calling and the conservative zone coverages, but the secondary just needs to pick up their game in my opinion. If this flaw can improve as I expect it to in the playoffs, Favre and The Jets are bound to make some noise in the playoffs.

So Jet fans relax as much as possible as it will be no surprise to me to see you seconds away from the AFC Championship game in January, and if the defense gets their act together at the right time, another showdown in Pittsburgh going down to the wire is where I expect them to be on Championship Sunday.

Hello Jets fans, Guru here from Mile High Report welcoming you to Broncos/Jets week.

It seems the Jets and Brett Favre have finally figured each other out and Gang Green is really starting the role. The Broncos felt the same way until an embarrassing loss to the Raiders last week. Ugh.

Anyway, got a Broncos question? Fire away! I'll check back in regularly to get those questions answered!

Good luck and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!

Wisconsin misses #4

I pulled into the parking lot of my local pub for my Thursday night dart league. “What’s going on?” Every parking space was full and there wasn’t an empty table or chair to be found. How could I forget—Brett Favre was playing Randy Moss and the rival team for the division lead. The crowd cheered with every one of Brett’s scores. A classic Favre drive put them in the lead with only a few seconds left on the clock. The rivals drove down to the red zone. There was time for one last play. No, it can’t be! Randy Moss made an incredible catch and tied the game. The pub’s crowd was silent in disbelief. On the first drive in overtime our hero, Brett, takes the team down the field and the winning field goal is made. The crowd goes wild! I am convinced that was the loudest cheer ever heard in the State of Wisconsin. . . for a New York Jets game.

On the way home it hit me. I just saw a great game where Brett Favre and the home team beat Randy Moss and the arch rivals for the division lead—something we’ve all seen before. But this time, it was a Jets/Patriots game. I hope the fans in New York and New Jersey realize and cherish the player they now have. Yes, he will have his bad days with multiple interceptions. But he brings an excitement to football that you probably won’t experience again in your lifetime; and comes from a 16-year stretch with a storied team that had the highest winning percentage in the league. Enjoy the journey for all it’s worth. I have my green and white #4 jersey ready for the playoffs.

Jets Defensive Recap

The Jets came into the game ranked 5th in the entire NFL at stopping the run, and although the defense gave up 125 yards on the ground, they did their jobs by forcing Matt Cassel to beat them.

Kris Jenkins played a great game. He had 3 tackles, one of them being a sack. Kris dominated the middle by stuffing the run for about 80% of the game. (He seemed to be tired for a couple of big drives that the Patiriots had.) Jenkins has been such a surprise coming from a 4-3 defense in Jacksonville, to the 3-4 in New York. Nobody figured he would be able to dominate having to deal with such a large adjustment, but he has proven that he might be one of a couple of Pro-Bowl players on the Jets defense.

The situation at cornerback looked great in the first half. Ty Law did a great job on Randy Moss in the 1st half, shutting him down for most of the game thanks to a double team with, safety, Kerry Rhodes.

Darrelle Revis did quite a good job on Wes Welker, who could be one of the best slot revievers to ever play the game. Welker did get 108 yards, but didn't seem to be as dominant as he usually does.

Dwight Lowery didn't play well. Dwight allowed Jabar Gaffney to become Cassel's favorite target in the first half. Gaffney finished the game with over 80 yards and a touchdown, a great game for his stadards.

The second half was a different story. After the Pats gained some momentum, the Jets coaching staff decided to switch Ty Law, who was just signed this week, to cover Gaffney in man to man coverage. This was a mistake. Law could not cover the short routes, hoping not to get beat deep. This allowed Cassel to gain most of his yardage, by opeing up the middle. Moss also had a little easier time getting open with Lowery, just a rookie, covering him. This was a bad coaching move, which allowed the Patriots offense to climb back into the game.

Calvin Pace seemed to have trouble covering Ben Watson. Chris Collinsworh, who was doing the color commentary for NFL Network last night, commented that Watson runs a 4.5. Now, I firmly believe that Collinsworh has some kind of "thing" for Randy Moss and the Patriots, because that's all he seemed to talk about last night. Anyway, that's beside the point. Watson, who I doubt runs a 4.5, is faster than Calvin Pace, and he proved it with an 80 yard, 1 touchdown game. Pace did do well stopping the run with 5 tackles, and 2 assists. He did put some pressure on Cassel in the first half, but that was totally missing in the second half. I think that Pace is a good linebacker, but he did not play well last night.

The Jets defensive coaching was just terrible on the final drive. I don't understand playing prevent defense when there is 1:04 on the clock. The Jets gave up 40 yards in 15 seconds, and all of a sudden, the Patriots were on the verge of breaking a lot of people's hearts. Yes, the twrow that Cassel made was great, but the catch that Randy Moss made was amazing. He makes it look so easy. (Too bad he only gives it his all for about 60% of the game.) What makes me wonder, however, is how we let the best reciever in the game get even half-way open. Everyone in New England and New York knew exactly where "No Check-Down" Cassel wanted to throw it.

Being a Jets fan, I was happier with the 24-6 lead, than watching a great game. However, this was probably the most entertaining game of the year. Luckily, the Jets got an "ace in the hole" with Brett Favre. New York is now 7-3 and has the lead in the AFC East. The next game is November 22, at Tennessee (9-0). This could be a playoff matchup, so it will be interesting to see where we stand in the AFC.

GO JETS

Jets Offensive Recap

Isn't it great to have Brett Favre?!

The Jets looked explosive, and on their toes in the first half last night, but the second half was a different story.

The Jets came out and scored on the opening drive, which to me, was the deciding factor in the game. It was a very balanced drive, with a mix of run plays with Thomas and Leon, and completions to five different recievers. During the drive, Mangenius threw the red flag on a great catch by Laverneus. The play was reversed for a first down, and we rode the momentum to a touchdown.

Leon Washington had a great game to say the least. He scored the first touchdown of the game on a great run after the catch to get across the goal line. We all know what he can do in the return game, and he did it again! His touchdown return was great, and made me say "DEVIN HESTER WHO?"

The catch that Jerricho Cotchery made was amazing. Favre was just beeing Favre as he threw up a long ball, and Jerricho pulled a David Tyree, and pinned it against his helmet to put the Jets in the red-zone, and he later scored the touchdown to cap the drive off.

Dustin Keller had a great game for the second week in a row, and is quickly becoming one of Brett's favorite targets, although he did drop a wide open touchdown pass, that could have been the dagger for the Patriots.

Thomas Jones played terrific in my mind. He was asked to carry the ball 30 times, and most of the carries were called to run straight into the teeth of a VERY hard-hitting Pats defense. However, Thomas grinded it out for 4 1/2 quarters, and broke the 100 yard mark, and also scored a touchdown. This guy could be in MVP talks if the Jets win the division. (YOU HEARD THAT HERE FIRST) .

Yes, the first half was great for the Green Machine, however, it wasn't pretty in the second. I give most of the credit to the Patriots' coaching staff. They made great adjustments for the second half, and the main adjustment was GET TO FAVRE. And they did. The Patriots defense turned it on in the second half, as they were flying all over the place..

Brett and the offense seemed to lack a little explosiveness, as the main plays were deek-and-dunk plays, or short passes to Keller over the middle.

The last two drives, however, were great, and proved that Brett Favre is probably the best quarterback to ever lace up cleats. On what seemed to be the last drive of the game, Brett drove the boys down the field with a little more mid-range passes, and a little less deek-and dunk. The Jets got to within the five yard line, and Favre made two passes that stuck out in my mind. These passes were the two balls he threw away, one into the stands of the corner of the endzone, and the other clanking off the left goal-post. He saw that the plays were not going to develop, and he still FOLLOWED THE TREND OF THE GAME. He didn't change anything he had been doing all night, which was be safe, and don't force it. Thomas capped the drive off with a short touchdown run, and it seemed to be over, but don't ever count out a champion.

The Pats found their way into the endzone with a great throw by Matt Cassel, and, in my mind, an even greater catch by Randy Moss. I strongly dis-like the Pats, but Randy Moss is the best reciever I have ever had the pleasure to watch. (I only got to watch Jerry towards the end of his career, I'm sure I would have a different opionion if I watched his entire career.) Anyways, now we go to overtime.

The NFL needs to go to the same system for overtime as the NCAA. It is unfairly decided by a coin flip, but I loved it as the Jets won the toss last night. (HAHA)

The game winning drive was great, as Brett did what he was brought here to do. He found Dustin Keller once again for a big catch that eventually led to a Jay Feely field goal to take over FIRST PLACE IN THE AFC EAST.

Overall it was such a great game! You couldn't ask for a better game to watch on a Thursday night!

I hate the Patriots,........there I said it!

Way to much optimism from the fans of New England. Is it optimism, or denial?

During the first quarter of the first game of the season their hopes and dreams of the season were gone,….and make no mistake,….. they are gone!

They say Cassel played a great game on Sunday night and he is much improved. I say that the Patriots played right into the Colts hands. The Colts,….the ACTUAL winners of the game. The Colts, who had a game plan of their own. I keep hearing about Bill Belichicks great game plan, but Bill and the Patriots lost. They executed their masterful game plan and still they lost. Like I said. The Colts had a plan too. Let’s not forget that. Their plan was to keep everything in front of them. Give New England field goals but keep them out of the end zone. The old bend but don’t break approach. Just like the Patriots have been doing for years. Everything Cassel got was given to him by the Colts. Dink and dunk all you want is what they said,….HOW ABOUT THROW A TOUCHDOWN IF YOU CAN.

The Colts were playing with a walk on, no name corner back. With Moss and Welker, two of the best in the game, the Patriots can’t throw one single TD pass. Cassel has 4 Td’s and 4 interceptions over the last 4 games and he had 3 TD’s and 3 interceptions over his first 4 games. IS HE much improved? He threw 3 Td’s against Denver and 4 TD’s in the other 7 games. Against Denver he looked great?? Need I remind you that so did Kansas City who looked like 80's Forty Niners against Denver and their awful defense. When the Pats lit it up against Denver you would think Christ had risen again.

On Saturday I played football with my 11 year old nephew and his friends. I was designated QB for both teams and I threw 12 TD’s. Then on Sunday I went to play football again. This time with my buddies. I threw one TD and three interceptions. MY POINT! I could care less if Cassel throws for 200 yards and a touchdown vs. 2-6 San Francisco. The fact that Cassel looks O.K. against teams like San Fran and St Louis means jack squat. Let’s see how he does against Pittsburgh, or Baltimore or Tennessee, or god help them,….the Giants. You think he’ll do what Brady himself couldn‘t do?

Most of the Patriots wins were against the chumps of the league. San Fran at 2-6. St Louis at 2-6. Kansas City at 1-7. Denver who is 4-4 and would be 3-5 if not for the blown call by Ed Hochuli. The Denver win,….that's the win they rally around as fans!!

Not only have the Patriots not beaten any good teams, but they have lost to mediocre teams. Teams like Miami 4-4 and the Chargers 3-5 and the Colts 4-4. The Colts and Chargers aren’t the teams to beat this year in the AFC, but they lost anyway. Miami is improved but still mediocre. After eight games played by the Patriots, the winning percentage of their opponents is .390.

The Jets at 5-3 have the best record of all the teams they played.

You see Patriot fans. I remember last year, and I remember you had Brady, and I remember you played San Diego with out two of their best players and they still should have beat you. Well now you’re the team missing your best player I remember how lucky you were to get to the Super Bowl, and I remember how lucky you were to go undefeated during the regular season. I remember the easy schedule you had last year. The easiest schedule in the league over the last two years HANDS DOWN!!!! I remember any good team you played last year played you well. The Colts, The Chargers, The Ravens should have beat you, the Giants could have beat you, the Cowboys beat themselves. You rolled over easy teams and played plenty of them. The Patriots weren’t as good as their record last year and on Super Bowl Sunday that was proven.

Last year they looked at the record and thought,….Hmmm we could be the best team ever. Not even close to the reality. The truth is the Patriots beat up on bad teams all year long in 07, or they were lucky by getting teams like the Chargers and Colts when they were injury riddled. The fans thought they were unstoppable while I thought it was only a matter of time before their luck and easy schedule wore out. Well it did against the Giants,……and if the Chargers were healthy during the playoffs it would have been a the Chargers who beat them. It should have been a Charger/Giant Super Bowl. That’s what I remember.

This year fans look at the Patriots record and think 5-3. They say to themselves we could do this. Do what??? Make the playoffs. The Patriots would be 2-6 in the NFC East and Kevin O’Connell would be the QB because Cassel would be to banged up to play.

Last year, with a healthy Tom Brady they didn’t get the job done. The Patriot fans may have forgotten the look in Tom Brady’s eyes during key moments of last years Super Bowl, but I certainly haven’t. The look of confusion. How do you think Cassel would have performed against that relentless pass rush of the Giants or the like. How do you think Cassel will do in a playoff atmosphere, with a playoff pass rush?

Jets Secondary?

Im curious what your guys detailed impression of the Jets secondary is.

I dont get a chance to watch alot of Jets games, but a couple of friends of mine talk up the Jets secondary all the time about how great it is. I confess I couldnt pick a Jets DB out of a line up, but I do note that they are ranked in the bottom half in the NFL against the pass, and this having played Miami and Cassel NE.

Is this a case that your secondary is young and still developing, but not there yet? Or that Pennington and Cassel just performed very well against you? Or some other reason?

How do you think you will match up against the Chargers, especially on the road on the West Coast.

Im not trying to start an argument here, I am genuinely curious. My friends who love the Jets secondary are pretty smart about football. But with my limited knowledge I dont see it, so I was hoping to find out more.

Thanks.
