Borrowing from ST to bolster D lost the game

I was surprised in Week 1 that Shonn Green was not active. What I realized later was that Ryan decided to bolster the defense, missing both S Ellis and C Pace, so he stacked the defense and consequently, had to deactivate some of his 3rd string players. Every week since that I noticed that different players were inactive, mainly to add personnel at weak spots on the field.

Now I dont know how common it is from week to week to dramatically change your active and inactive players - but the Jets do it a lot. And unfortunately, with Jenkins out for the season and some other minor injuries, Rex apparently did the same last week against the Fins.

While our defense certainly played well and looked the part, thanks in part to the creative personnel packages on the field, the special teams suffered as a direct result:

"Westhoff was without three of his favorite players Sunday, Ahmad Carroll, Marquice Cole and Marques Murrell, who were inactive. The Jets wanted more size and help for banged-up linebacker Bart Scott."

So it wasn't just a fluke that Miami was so dangerous on kickoffs - with Carroll, Cole and Murrell all inactive, and Brad Smith injured and J Miller signed to just handle KR duties (this spot used to belong to L Washington who was also the 2nd RB.. this week we needed 2 bodies to fill that role, RB S Greene and KR J Miller), we should have realized early on in the game we'd be in trouble - especially when K Jay Feely made two or three kickoff tackles. Once we saw our Kicker getting downfield and making the tackle, EVERYONE should have realized that something wasn't right with that picture. And now I think we all understand why.......

Now I don't necessarily blame Rex for this because looking at our Defense, they are among the most devastating in the NFL, despite a laundry list of injuries and suspensions since week 1. However, you cannot completely deplete special teams and expect to contain the kickoffs. After the first 2 kick returns for a touchdown, I was surprised and mad to see they were still kicking to Ginn. I would have preferred them kicking it out of the endzone (hell, even out of bounds and take the penalty) than give up huge field position and a possible 3rd TD to Ginn.

I think we need to cross train the team a little better on ST so that when we pull the 3rd and 4th stringers out (or inactive them) and the guys higher on the depth chart have to play ST, they know what they're doing.

been wondering why we never throw them. i can honestly only remember one all season. that was yesterday against miami and it went for 28 yards. and this is without leon, of course. why weren't we throwing them to him? he's very good. even with him out, i'm pretty confident screens can be effective. throw them to jones. throw them to greene. throw them to keller. just throw them.

can we petition schottenheimer to call at least 3 screens a game? please help. it will make our offense more diverse and efficient.

Ryan Not Ready For Prime Time ......

I'll give Ryan credit for his talent and skill as a defensive coordinator. He clearly is very good ....... maybe superior ..... in his ability to put together a first-rate defense in the NFL. As to his ability to excel as a head coach ....... I think the jury is definitely out in this area. Ryan is growing increasingly suspect in his ability to exercise good judgement as a head coach ....... not only in his game-day decisions but also in his inarticulate ways of communicating to the press (and no doubt to his players as well).

The more one sees (and hears) Ryan, the less convincing he is in his attempt to be a head coach of an NFL team. His preparations for games are suspect and his game-day decisions are even more suspect. It's too bad that Woody is probably even more incompetent than Ryan because he (Woody) probably doesn't have a clue whatsoever that he made a bad decision in hiring Ryan. The Jets should cut their losses at the end of the season ........ declare this season a mistake and go after a real head coach.

Pace, Phins and Week 8

1. I actually don't think the media blew his comments out of proportion. I don't think many people, other than the jets or dolphins fans even heard about it.

2. His comments were quite ridiculous. You can't come out of a loss and call the opposing qb, that just beat you, a clown. Now I love what calvin can do on the field but he was damn near invisible in that game and has the nerve to call out the miami offense that just ran all over us.

3. WHY ARE THERE SO MANY DOLPHINS FANS ON THIS BLOG? Go back to your little fish blog and worry about your own damn team. We know you envy New York, but damn, we don't need to see it.

4. My prediction for this weekend: I think the defense rebounds. As big a loss as jenkins was miami, mostly runs off the tackles in the wildcat, which should give pace plenty of oppurtunities to redeem himself. We will also have the return of a healthy Cotchery. He played hurt for all of that last game. He should help keep the defense honest. I still think its a grind it out game and i have the jets winning 20-17, but not covering.

The Running Game - The Win

Did I just see Thomas Jones put his hat into the chest of a Raider…? in a blowout ? In the fourth quarter?…..on the goal line ? …..those small things define good teams and define fundamental football – The Jets are good enough to beat playoff teams if they play that style of ball every week………

I wrote in another post that irrespective of the many yards they've been gaining on the ground, The Jets won't beat good teams unless the running game becomes more physical. Sometimes the best play for a running back is to hit a linebacker in the mouth, the backs did that today. There have been games this year when they didn't do it at all ( bad football ) .

To see veterans and rookies alike playing good football, in the fourth quarter, in a blowout is a tribute to the coaching staff. I won't drink the kool-aid yet, but this is a team that we can respect in a win or loss. When was the last time you felt that way about The Jets....The Sack Exchange?

Second How Bad Could Our Season Get?

First things first.. What is the deal with Mark Sanchez? 5 int.. Sure he didn’t have the three he worked with this off season, Cothchery, Smith, Stucky, and he played in new weather but he didn't look confident in his throws, and he was late on routes. I personally think that Jets fans should be worried about our franchise QB. With the pressure of the New York media and the fans, it is a difficult environment to come in as a 22 year old and prosper. I believe he has the ability to succeed at such a young age, but the Jets should have kept with the run. Sanchez shouldn't have even dropped back! When you have such a dynamic run game, which the Jets did, it is hard to not prosper in the passing game. It sets up the play action and the defense puts and extra man in the box so there is single coverage at the wide receiver.

Second, we shot ourselves in the foot by giving the Bills 91 yards from 13 penalties. We killed many of our drives and two important ones in overtime with dumb, unnecessary penalties like unnecessary roughness and false starts.

Third. We lost two key players to injuries. Kris Jenkins, who is sadly now out for the year, and Damien woody, who aggravated his foot.

I’m not being pessimistic but realistic, the Jets 2009-2010 season could possibly be over.

As any other loyal Jet fan I feel a bit sour lately. I always love how they dangle 3-0 starts or maybe even take you deeper into the season with an 8-3 mark and then rip out your pathetic little heart and go River Dance all over it.

So we have a QB dilemma-- great O-line, great RB's, above average receiving, TE, and FB,--so now what?

The Jets made a late move to acquire Kevin O'Connell from the Lions for pretty solid compensation. Why? Were Kellen Clemens and Erik Ainge (who looked pretty strong in the pre-season) not enough for back up? Did we bring this guy in just to dress as the captain for the Patriot game and maybe give us some secrets?

I still say, as I did in a previous post , that Sanchez needs a breather. If he does not perfrom this weekend in the warmer air of Oakland, then he needs to see the game from the sidelines--for ONE game.

Kyle Orton!!!!! 6-0--wow! I guess I can wait another three years for the maturation process to happen--I have waited 39 years thus far, what's another three!

James Ihedigbo - what do YOU think?

i'm going to start this fanpost by pointing out that i'm a bills fan. i'm also going to say that i've watched the jets for years, and root for them when they don't play buffalo =)

as many people saw in yesterday's game, James Ihedigbo (and another player, whose name escapes me) got into a tussle with bills' starting TE derek fine. ihedigbo threw a punch, which was (in my opinion) possibly the worst single decision of the day by any player on either team. this is saying something considering the poor quality of play on both sides of the ball for both teams. the penalty cost the team fifteen yards, and was directly responsible for giving the bills good field position late in the game.

what should be done about him? i know he was ejected, which was a good call in a game that was extremely poorly officiated. do you think he should be fined, or possibly even cut from the team? i don't think i'm going out on a limb when i say that the jets are a smash-mouth football team, but that's taking the method and turning it into a bit of madness, don't you think?

so, discuss. what should the jets do about Ihedigbo? and, beyond that, what should be done - in terms of coaching, t-rex and elsewhere - to prevent that from happening again?

Time For A Change At QB?

Ok-I am not ready to shoot Sanchez...really I'm not. But this team is too talented to allow our QB to blow games for us week in and week out. He's tentative and obviously not ready for this stage. The loss to the Saints and Bills can easily be pinned on Sanchez. Our O-coordinator is being killed on these boards, deservingly so. But is Clemens or Ainge worth playing in order to give our new QB a breather? Woudl he benefit from being quasi benched in order to see the game from the sidelines?

I know all about growing pains...but I am all out of Advil and I am hurting along with the rest of Jets nation.

Ainge played double the games at Tennessee in a big SEC conference than Sanchez did at USC--maybe its worth a glimpse?

Look at all those players below the age of 30! The Jets have 13 players at least 30, with the oldest player (Tony Richardson) being 37.

I'm kind of blue about going 0-3 after rocking a 3-0 start. But if we don't win it all this season, it won't matter in the long run. I think this Jets group will have enough success this season that there won't be a complete housecleaning during the 2010 offseason. So, if the Jets keep a lot of this roster intact, they'll only get better; especially Sanchez.

If you add up all the ages of the players, the average age is 28. This is a young team that will only get better as the seasons roll along.

Bob Sutton LB,Kerry Locklin DL, and Bill Callahan OL all not very good, LB's still not very good the only 3 doing anything are Scott,Harris and Pace will be back to his old self this week other than those highly talented 3,yuk! DL other than Big Jenks! nothing Big Cat! totally sucks as well as Douglas if Locklin was so good he'd be able to get more out of the Samoan's as well as ask for some other pieces or help!, as for Callahan he has former first rounders except for Moore and this is his best he can do please. The running game has gone south and pass protection hasn't been that great the Jets need someone like a Russ Grim mean and tough!

The pressure we put on the quarterback won the first 3 games for us. Putting Matt Schaub, Tom Brady, and Kerry Collins on the ground made our defense dominant and had people talking us up as Super Bowl contenders and possibly the best team in the NFL. We lost to the Saints, yes, but our pressure on Drew Brees made him look like an average quarterback rather than a man who threw for 5,000 yards last season. The stats don’t reflect our pressure because of our low number of sacks, but that is only because of the ability and intelligence of the opposing quarterbacks to get the ball out quickly. This past Sunday against the Dolphins, our defense got lit up. I didn’t see many plays on defense where we attempted to confuse the quarterback and the offensive coordinator.

Chad Henne isn’t the caliber of the other 4 quarterbacks we have faced, but his 130.4 passer rating made him look like Dan Marino. I saw too many defensive setups with 4 down lineman and zero movement and chaos at the line of scrimmage. I also saw too many plays where they brought a 4-man rush with those same 4 down lineman. It was the most predictable defense I have seen from the Jets since Mangini. We don’t have the talent on defensive line to pressure the quarterback with those kinds of rushes.

Now I love Rex Ryan at head coach and I love this defense, but that was not Rex Ryan’s style of coaching and that was not this defense’s style of play. If we stuck to the game plan we used the past 4 games, we could’ve recorded a huge number of sacks against the Dolphins and probably won the game. A quarterback in his second career start wouldn’t have had the ability to get rid of the ball like Schaub, Brady, Collins, or Brees. Regardless of who we are playing or what quarterback we are facing, the defensive approach should be the same. We need to get to the quarterback.

I would like to get John B's (and other NY fans) opinions on Pace's words after the game

Calvin Pace came out after the game and said the following:

Afterward, linebacker Calvin Pace, who returned from a four-game suspension, was angry. Pace called Henne a “second-year clown quarterback,” saying “you have to give him credit, but our defense lost the game today.”

Pace added: “I’m going to be honest. I can’t respect that stuff, all that Wildcat. Because we’re in the N.F.L., man.” He called the Wildcat “nonsense”

Do you support his opinion on this? Or maybe the way he said it? I have been really respectful over there the last few days and although I have been attacked a few times, for the most part most of you have been kool to chat with here. Last night durring the game I was chatting a bit on your game thread and had a good time there. So this is not to attack any of you.. just looking for honest opinions on Calvin Pace's comments.

I personally believe he is out of line. I know he must be pissy or whatnot.. but to blame the loss on the idea that the wildcat shouldnt be allowed in the NFL ?? Cmon Pace.. is a formation. Some teams have been able to stop it. I imagine years ago when 90% of the plays were running plays that some people got pissy when QB's started chucking it down field too. Does that mean that we shouldnt allow passing? Cmon Pace suck it up ya lost, all teams lose some games. Hell the Phins are only 2-3 this year. Im sure next time we meet up in NY Ryan will have a better game plan for the WC formation as he will plan a little better for it.

Anyways.. again thoughts on Pace's comments? And again.. great game guys it was a good one!

I'm not saying the sky is falling but I do see quite a few holes ,Jets oline needs more help to protect Sanchez and open hole's for the ground game.To start Woody,Moore and maybe even Faneca cut or trade for picks,cause if there's no cap don't think if Woody opens his wallet and ponies up some serious dollars for some players that they would not come and play money talks and bs walks.CBA what CBA the owners will try to break the union this off season.

I checked into some FA's for next year;

OT Jeremy Trueblood :6'8" 320lbs. 4th year starting RT for TB

,Winston Justice:6'6" 320lbs. 4th year starting RT for Philly.

Duece Luitui:6'4" 338lbs. 4th year starting RG for Ari.

Logan Mankins:6'4" 310lbs. 5th year starting LG for the Pats.

Just to name a few and remember Marshall and Chris Henry from Cincy. will be FA's as well

as for the other side of the ball the Jets need to shore up D-line and DB's as well as LB depth,lets start with the DL and work out first cuts.

the only DL to keep would be Jenks and Pitoitua dump the rest of them next level LB's keep Pace,Scott,Harris and Westerman dump trade whatever ,as for DB's get rid of Cole,Coleman.Ihedigbo now lets move Lowrey to FS as for Strickland and Sheppard great depth.FA available

Richard Seymor:6'6" 310lbs. 9th year DE. still has alot left in the tank and can tutor Pitoitua.

Derrick Johnson:6'3" 242lbs. 5th year ILB/OLB .fast great tackler.

Demarcus Ware:6'4" 256lbs. 5th year OLB. would be great in Jets D as pass Rusher.

Tully Banta-Cain:6'2" 250lbs. 7th year DE/OLB. depth guy.

Pierre Woods:6'5" 255lbs. 4th year DE/OLB/ILB very versatile and can contain the outside edge.

Marlin Jackson:6'0" 196lbs. 5th year CB good size and can cover the best 1a and 2 WR.

Corey Webster:6'0" 202lbs. 5th year CB. extremely physical and a real ball hawk lined up next to Revis my Lord!!!

and here's a big question mark Merriman 6'4" 265lbs. 5th year could be huge pickup?this could happen if there 's no CBA if enough money is thrown at these players they will play don't think they won't cause it always comes down to the dollar bills and looking out for themselves

What has happened to the Jets pass rush the last two games? Even with the return of Calvin Pace, the defense made Henne look like Payton Manning.. Also... Leon Washington must be on the field more..if he is just put in for certain situations...the opposing defense knows to key on him. I hope that this season doesn't start resembling last when a great start doesn't go by the wayside. MUST beat pitiful Bills Sunday or we are in serious trouble
