My Top 10 OLB ratings for the draft

The one thing we are all in agreement with here on GGN is that we need an upgrade at this position . But how many players shold we draft at this position ?

I think we will draft 2 guys at this position but with all the extra picks we have i hope we get 3 guys to add the the roster and make this position one of the strenghts going into the future . All the ratings for the players will be out of a total of 100

Jets History: Our Coaches Win Loss Records

Did anyone sit down and think it may not be our players that are causing us not to win another SB. I was just thinking about how many wins some of our past coaches have. So I am going to let you know our coaches Win/Loss records since the franchise inception.

Draft By Draft Analysis of Mike Tannenbaum - Pt. 6, 2011

This is the next-to-last in the series of draft and offseason analyses of the moves that Mike Tannenbaum has made or didn't make. I will again look at this draft and offseason, try to show how it impacted upon the team's performance on the field during the 2011 season and resulted in some of problems in the locker room.

At the end of that post, I will post a couple of different rosters that the Jets could have going into this offseason rather than the roster they currently have had Tanny not made so many trades, and poor moves in FA. I will also include a poll to see which of the three rosters you would prefer.

Follow after the jump for my thoughts.

Top 10 Jets Plays of 2011

Here's a look back at the top ten plays by the Jets in 2011. You may notice that a few of them came in just several games - in my defense, there really weren't a whole lot of spectacular plays to choose from in my opinion. After the list is over, let the debate begin

#10 Kyle Wilson gets his 1st Interception (Week 7 vs. Chargers)

a. Many people were starting to say that Wilson was the CB equivalent of another recent Jets draft bust - although it wasn't critical, it certainly got that particular monkey off his back and gave a sigh of relief to every Jets fan.

#9 Darrelle Revis gets his 1st INT since 2009 (Week 1 vs. Cowboys)

a. Helped set up the game winning drive in the most crucial part of the game.

b. Would have been higher if the throw hadn't been so careless or thrown by Tony Romo in the 4th quarter.

c. Came on the heels of a less than stellar performance - reminding everyone that challenging too much won't end well.

#8 Aaron Maybin gets his 1st sack, forces a fumble (Week 4 vs. Ravens)

a. Despite not having a significant outcome on the game, it was great to see a draft bust make a big play - and it gave many fans hope for what was and is to come.

#7 Mike Devito forces Tony Romo fumble at the 1-yard line (Week 1 vs. Cowboys)

a. Literally saved what would have been a game-sealing touchdown.

#6 Matt Slauson's TD (Week 11 vs. Broncos)

a. Showed incredible awareness on a day where nobody else on the team was.

b. While it may not be one of the all-time great plays, it was an impressive feat of quick thinking and quicker hands.

(#5 - #1 after the jump.)

Jets keeping Wayne Hunter???

That's what Cimini is reporting. By not cutting Hunter today, the Jets are on the hook for 2.45 million to Hunter. I do not get it. I just do not get it. Hunter's performance by published and reported metrics (hits, sacks, other QB disruptions allowed per percentage of plays) was awful. Sadly, it appeared even worse than the stats showed, when actually watching the games. This money is too much for a back up tackle. I assume they plan on letting him start again in 2012. Hate to say it, but will we now be keeping and starting Eric Smith and Mulligan next year as well?

Who Is The Best Jets QB Of The Last Ten Years?

Over the last ten seasons, the New York Jets have had a list of starting quarterbacks as diverse as their records during this span. Beginning with the 2002-2003 season the Jets have made the playoffs 5 times, with 2 AFC Championship Game Appearances. During this span they have been led at quarterback by Vinny Testaverde, Chad Pennington, Brooks Bollinger, Quincy Carter, Kellen Clemens, Brett Favre, and Mark Sanchez. They all have had bad moments, some of them have had good moments, and so I ask you GGN, who has been the best Jet quarterback of the past 10 years?

Vinny Testaverde

While he was a great Jets QB, Vinny went out with a whimper starting in the 2002-2003 season. After the Jets fell to 1-3, Chad Pennington replaced Testaverde, and the rest, at least for that year, was history. Pennington led the Jets to an AFC East championship as Vinny sat. That year he posted a 65.1 completion percentage, with 3 touchdowns and 3 picks. The 2003-2004 season was even worse for Vinny. After Chad Pennington was injured in a preseason game against the Giants, Vinny took over to start the year. Testaverde went 2-5 during that span, bringing his record over the last 2 years to a horrific 3-8. Vinny did have 7 touchdowns and only 2 interceptions during that span, but the Jets were terrible that year. He then returned for the Jets when they were wracked by injury in the 2005 season, and beat what was a very good Tampa Bay team early in the year, before, naturally, losing his next 3 games.

Chad Pennington

Boy, I’ve got some good memories of the Jets with Chad Pennington. Chad took over the 2002 season threw for 3,120 yards and 22 touchdowns, and led the Jets to the only home playoff game I have ever been to, a 41-0 murder over the Colts. Sports Illustrated was touting him as the next great quarterback in the NFL, better then Mike Vick when he was first dominating with the Falcons. Everything was going great, and then he got hurt. Pennington missed the first 6 games of the 200 season and the jets limped to the finish line at 6-10. But then Chad came back from the dead! The jets started off 5-0 the next season, but then Chad reinjured his rotator cuff, and the Jets limped to the finish line at 10-6. Chad threw for 16 touchdowns and 9 picks that year, and the jets were eliminated in the second round in the Doug Brien game. In 2005 Pennington had more drama with his rotator cuff, having surgery in October, and the Jets struggled, going 4-12. However in 2006, with the vaunted offensive attack of Brian Schottenheimer, Pennington somehow thrived! Chad threw for 3,352 yards, had 17 touchdowns and the jets made it to the playoffs. In 2007 the Jets were horrendous however, as Chad led them to a 1-7 start, before being benched, and then replaced by Favre.

Quincy Carter

Carter, the former Montreal Alouette, Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wing, Kansas City Brigade and Abilene Ruff Rider, went 2-1 when the Chad Pennington was injured in 2004. He then suffered a drug relapse, and disappeared into the football underworld known as the AF2, never to be heard from again.

Brooks Bollinger

Bollinger, the current head football coach at Murray Hill high School in Minnesota, was a career backup. That is of course until both Chad Pennington and Jay Fiedler went down with injuries in 2005. After 41-year-old Vinny Testeverde failed to perform, in came Brooks! The Jets ended up 4-12, and Brooks ended up a Florida Tusker in 2009.

Kellen Clemens

T2

via cdn2.sbnation.com

Clemens was signed in 2006, but barely played as Chad dominated. In 2007 however Chad was injured and in week 2 in came Clemens to play the Baltimore Ravens. I actually remember this game! The Jets were getting killed, but then Clemens led an incredible comeback, only to be thwarted when, on the last play of the game, with the jets trailing 20-13, Justin McCareins dropped a wide-open touchdown pass. That was the first time I can remember crying about the Jets. THANKS JUSTIN! Anyway Clemens was a pretty good backup throughout his tenure with the Jets. The highlight of his career was probably beating the 1-11 Buccaneers when Sanchez was injured during his first season. He is now bouncing around the league as a second stringer.

Brett Favre

Do we really need to see any pictures involving Favre? Everyone knows how this turned out. The Jets were 8-3. Favre was incredible. Then it all fell apart. Favre threw 8 picks, took a couple pics and sent them to Jenn Sterger, and only threw for 2 touchdowns in his final 5 games. In week 17 he led the Jets to a loss, against Chad Pennington and the AFC East champion Miami Dolphins.

Not much needs to be said here for Mark. In his three years the Jets have been mediocre, spectacular, and then mediocre again. He has won more playoff games then any other Jet QB, but hasn’t reached the Promised Land yet. Obviously this year with a porous offensive line Sanchez really struggled, but looking at his body of work as a whole as a Jet, he has been pretty effective, and has played very well in just about every playoff game he has been in, but the jury is definitely still out in him after this years performance.

So obviously this is a two horse race, between Chad and Sanchez. At times the last two years the Jets have won despite some of Sanchez’s mistakes. The two AFC Championship game teams both had great defenses, and solid running games. That being said Sanchez has played very well in every Jets playoff win, without putting up huge numbers. Chad never made it passed the second round (Even though he got a bad brake when Doug Brien’s kick hit the crossbar) but there were years, 2002 stands out immediately, where the Jets really won because Chad dominated. Those Jets teams with Chad, and Curtis Martin were good but never good enough. Chad had potential to become a great QB, but because of all his injuries he never fully panned out. With the benefit of looking back at a full career, Chad’s tenure with the Jets was marked by flashes of brilliance, injury after injury, and ultimately a messy divorce. No one knows how Sanchez will turn out, but based on what has happened so far in his pro career, I think he is the best Jets quarterback since Pennington took over in 2002.

Optimistic News for Jets Fans

So today I read something that made me very happy considering I am a Jets Fan. Anthony Fasano of the Miami Doplhins will have to take a pay cut he wants to the stay with the team. This news comes out after Head Coach Joe Philbin already stated that the team wanted to get more explosive at Tight End. Fasano would be a great addition to a team in search for a traditional TE which is exactly what Fasano is. He's a very good blocker as well as a good receiver, especially in the Red Zone. He is a Sparano favorite as Sparano traded a 4th round pick to Dallas just to get him when he became the Head Coach of the Dolphins. He already knows Sparano's system as he was with him in Dallas and again in Miami. I think he would be a wonderful compliment to Dustin Keller. He's a player that has given us issues before and he's also given the Patriots issues. If he gets cut then this must definitely be a possibility. He'll get the opportunity to work with the coach he's been with his entire career in Sparano, and he'll be able to stay in the same division and stick it to his old team. And if that is not enough he is orignally from NJ so he will get to come back home. What do you guys think?

Who Stays, Who Goes?

In this article I am going to take a look at the 2012 New York Jets free agent class and give my opinion on who should stay with the team, and who should be allowed to walk.

Sione Pouha: Sione Pouha played the best season of his career in 2011 and proved to be one of the most valuable players on the defense. He might be a on the wrong side of 30 and he may not be getting any younger, but when you have a rock in the middle like Pouha, you don't let him walk. Pro Football Focus graded Sione as the top 34 Nose Tackle in the league and constantly praised him and how he is not able to be moved in the middle. Our cap situation is very tight and Tanny will definitely be busy restructuring contracts before we see any major signings, but I can't see Sione not being on the team in 2012, especially when Kenrick Ellis may be deported if found guilty.

Bryan Thomas: Unfortunately, Thomas saw his season end early this year with a torn ACL. He is the longest tenured Jet, but he may not be one for much longer. He is going on 33 years and is simply old and slow. It really speaks volumes about how bad our pass rush is that he led the team in sacks two seasons ago. He did what he was asked to do in playing the run and setting the edge, but it is time for the front office to move on and get younger, faster, and stronger at the position through the draft or via free agency.

Jim Leonhard: "Jimmy" as most know him from Hard Knocks, has held the strong safety spot on the Jets since he came over from Baltimore in 2009. He was always undersized and slow for a safety, standing at 5'8", but did everything that Rex asked of him. He played in the box, did well in run support, and held his own in coverage. "Held his own" is not where this team needs to be though. Jimmy is a fan-favorite and a great story, coming back from his injuries and such, but I think it might be time to move on. He will be 30 soon, and, simply put, isn't what we need at this point in time. I expect the Jets to look for a new starting safety through the draft, like Mark Barron or George Iloka, or through a pretty talented free agent class at the position.

LaDainian Tomlinson: I think Tomlinson will leave the team. The Jets used Tomlinson well in his two years here and he proved to be a valuable mentor and team leader on a team that so desperately needed one. However, he is getting older, and we have a pair of talented backs in Greene and McKnight. Tomlinson lacks explosiveness anymore and his career is practically over. He will probably sign with the Super Bowl favorites and take one last shot at getting the Super Bowl ring that he deserves.

Robert Turner: I don't get it. We all remember that game where Turner went down and never returned. We knew that were something to happen to Mangold, we would be in the pooper. Well...something did...and we shall never talk about it again. What I don't get is why people thought that this team would have been much better had Turner been healthy. What has he ever shown that leads you to believe that he would've been a reliable backup. I digress. I expect the Jets to resign him because they are scared of another fiasco happening again. He can also play any interior line position which is pretty valuable I guess.

Kevin O'Connell: He sucks. Bye.

Mark Brunell: He's old. And he sucks now. He was a good mentor and may be back with the team later as a coach, but hopefully never again as a player. Deuces, Mark.

Plaxico Burress: The only way I see the Jets resigning Burress is if he accepts a cheap, one-year deal and accepts that he will only be used in the red zone. I doubt this will happen, but it'd be smart. I think the front office will pursue some receivers in the draft. They have shown great interest in Gerrell Robinson from Arizona State.

Nick Folk: Two terrible years in a row. If Westy brings him back, he loses a ton of credibility. Hopefully Folk will never come within 10,000 feet of New York ever again.

Brodney Pool: I'm not ready to give up on Pool. I don't think he was ever given the attention he deserved in training camp because of Rex's bromance with Eric Smith and Jimmy Leonhard. He has flashed potential and has the size and speed that you look for in a starting safety. He is a terrible tackler, but that can be resolved. I hope the Jets resign him and give him a chance to compete for the starting job in training camp.

Donald Strickland: He played OK in some games, and just plain bad in others. He is on the wrong side of 30. I don't see any reason to bring him back. The Jets have some capable backup corners in Cole, Trufant, and Lankster.

Marquice Cole: For a cornerback playing in a drastically limited role, he has actually impressed me. The majority of his practice time is likely spent on special teams where he has played well. I don't think any other teams even know who this guy is and he could be a diamond-in-the-rough type player for us. Plus Rex loves his defensive backs. I expect him back. One or two year deal.

Jamaal Westerman: For some reason, the coaches felt that he could become a starter after Thomas went down. Clearly not. He lost tons of playing time towards the end of the year to Josh Mauga, Garrett McIntyre, and Aaron "Mayhem" Maybin. He is a RFA, and Rotoworld thinks the Jets will tender him with a second or third rounder. I don't think the Jets retain him.

Patrick Turner: Finally Patrick Turner flashed some ability. He was clutch on third downs at the end of the year and came up with some big time grabs in the middle of the field. He is a guy who I doubt any other team in the NFL has any interest in and I am willing to bet that he comes back for one more year on the practice squad. He might almost be ready to take that next step towards become a 4th string receiver.

Aaron Maybin: I love this kid. He has one of the best stories in the NFL and has really come through big time. He is a Jets fan, and coaching staff favorite. Give him a bunch of attention in training camp and lock him in the weight room for a while and he could become more than a third down pass rusher. I desperately hope the Jets bring him back and find a way to enhance his talents ever further. A two year deal should do.

Matthew Mulligan: He is a penalty machine and might have the worst hands in the league. He is an alright blocker, but that doesn't make up for anything else. Let him walk and find his way onto another team like Hartsock did. Then address the tight end position in the middle to late rounds of the draft.

Ellis Lankster: Like Cole, he Lankster has shown value on special teams. He also flashed some potential in the preseason. He could be a nice and worthwhile project going forward. Bring him back.

Martin Teveseau: He is our defensive Patrick Turner. A guy who has all of the physical tools in the world, but is raw just about everywhere else. He should be brought back to compete for a roster spot and get another year of work on the practice squad.

RECAP:

Resign: Pouha, Robert Turner, Plaxico Burress, Martin Teveseau, Ellis Lankster, Marquice Cole, Patrick Turner, Aaron Maybin, Brodney Pool

Let Walk: Matthew Mulligan, Donald Strickland, Jamaal Westerman, Ladainian Tomlinson, Jim Leonhard, Bryan Thomas, Kevin O'Connell, Mark Brunell, Nick Folk

Cordy Glenn, OT/OG, Georgia

Cordy Glenn NFL Draft Analysis - 2010 Season (via TMBDraft)

Cordy Glenn NFL Draft Analysis - Boise State (2011 Season) (via TMBDraft)

6-5, 350, athlete

Ok, I'm gonna level with you... I know nada about O-line play. I can't speak with a lick of intelligence towards what makes a good OL guy or a bad one, and I won't even pretend I can talk about technique as far they are concerned. I'll leave the expert OL analysis to JB and Can'tWait. But dangit, I know talent when I see it. And Cordy Glenn is one talented mofo. People... men that weigh 350 lbs aren't supposed to be able to move like this guy. Yeah, I'd like to see him a little meaner and a little nastier. I'd like to see him really uncork on some dude and drive him 5-10 yards off scrimmage. But that stuff can be learned. You can teach mentality. However, you can't "learn" to be 350 lbs with nimble feet. Cordy Glenn is dang freak and I want this man on our team.

Glenn can start, right now, at Right Tackle and we'd have the best pass pro in the league. But I really think he'd be an All-Pro caliber player at LG with his ability to not only maul, but to pull around the edge and destroy fools. If we can get Ducasse to click and were able to stick Glenn at LG, we'd have a freaking DOMINANT o-line. Or we can just stick him at RT and still be pretty dang on good.

Glenn just might be the perfect OL pick to launch the true ground & pound scheme that we've been paying lip service to.
