Pro Football Focus ranked the rosters in the NFL. They apparently do not think much about the Jets. Gang Green rated only 23rd.
Top five players: DE Muhammad Wilkerson, DT Sheldon Richardson, DT Leonard Williams, WR Brandon Marshall, CB Darrelle Revis
Starters who should be upgraded: LB Erin Henderson, OT Breno Giacomini, OG Brian Winters, QB Geno Smith, LB Lorenzo Mauldin, CB Buster Skrine
The strength of this team is still up front, despite the departure of defensive tackle Damon Harrison in free agency. Wilkerson, Richardson and Williams give the Jets three versatile and talented disruptive players. There are some pieces around them, too, including Revis, who is still a fine player despite an inevitable decline.
The Jets' offense is held back by issues up front and at quarterback, which is not likely to be solved by the addition of rookie Christian Hackenberg, who had negative PFF grades in all three years at Penn State.
We get it. Your site doesn't like Hackenberg. That statement is meaningless when it comes to the 2016 Jets. Hackenberg is not going to be the starter unless he looks way better than PFF expects. The starter at quarterback is likely to be either Ryan Fitzpatrick or Geno Smith.
In any event. I don't think even being 23rd is a big deal. The way I see it, there are a handful of really good teams at the top and a handful of really bad teams at the bottom. Most teams are in the middle, and there is not a lot separating them. These teams could have good seasons if injuries and a few things break their way and bad if they don't. The Jets got these breaks in 2015. They could again in 2016. If a team like this gets hot at the right time, it could even win it all.
