As we approach the season, we are going to count down the history of Jets jersey numbers along with some of the notable players to wear each number. Today we will look at number 84.
The Jets have a pair of notable players to wear number 84 in their history. The first is an original Titan, wide receiver Art Powell. Powell played a year in the NFL with Philadelphia before moving to the Titans of New York for the inaugural American Football League season in 1960. He lasted three seasons in New York. He was in the top eight in the three major receiving categories in all three seasons. He led the AFL with 1,130 receiving yards in his final New York season. His rights were sold to Oakland after that year. Powell went to four straight Pro Bowls after moving on to the Raiders.
The second notable Jet to wear number 84 was Mark Lomas, who spent 1970 through 1974 in green and white. Sacks were not an official stat at that time, but Lomas unofficially led the team in that category in 1972 and 1973. He also unofficially is tied for a franchise record with four sacks in a single game in 1970.
