AGOP: We got Marshall. Now what?

Before I start my AGOP I want to outline what I think the Jets offense and defense will look like this season. They are expected to run the spread offense under Chan Gailey, and I think it’s going to be more pass-centric than we’re used to seeing. Defensively, I think Bowles will run a scheme similar to Rex with one major change. Quinton Coples is probably the Jets biggest enigma, but what we do know about him is he can play strong run defense from the 3-4 OLB position, and he can rush the passer when his hand is in the dirt. I think Bowles runs a 3-4 base, but goes to a 4 man line on 3rd downs in order to maximize Coples’ potential. With that in mind, here is my AGOP.

Cuts:

Percy Harvin- 10.5 mill saved. After the Brandon Marshall deal the writing is on the wall.

There are other players on the roster who obviously won’t be here, but they’ll be replaced by other bodies with comparable salaries, so I didn’t see the point releasing them when the net sum will be most likely be 0 in the end.

Available cap space: ~48 million

Resignings:

Damon Harrison: 4 years 16 mill (3 mill in first year). If Bowles is running a 3-4 base then you need to lock up Snacks. That and nose tackles are paid relatively low compared to other positions, and cheap talent is always welcome.

Legar Douzable: 3 years 6.5 mill (2 mill in first season). Good depth piece and you need insurance for the teams strongest position group.

Extensions:

Muhammad Wilkerson: 5 years 60 mill (10 mill in first season). I don’t think this will move really needs to be explained. He’s arguably the team’s best player and he deserves his payday.

Signings:

QB- Matt Moore: 2 years 8 mill (4 mill in first season). In all honesty Geno Smith may be the team’s best option for this season. None of the free agent options are all that appealing, and personally I don’t see Mariota or Jameis being there at 6. Moore is a good backup and tutor in the event that the team needs to take a QB high in next year’s draft.

RB- CJ Spiller: 3 years 13.5 mill (4.5 in the first season). Spiller thrived in Gailey’s offense in Buffalo to the tune of 6 yards per carry. He’s injury prone, but Ivory is still here to take the load off of Spiller.

OG- Orlando Franklin: 5 years 32.5 mill (6.5 in first season). Iupati might be the most well known guard on the market, but Franklin is probably the most well rounded. Sign me up.

CB- Antonio Cromartie: 2 years 8 mill (4 mill in first season). With the question marks surrounding Dee Milliner and Dexter McDougle a short term low risk deal with a veteran like Cro may be the best option.

CB- Buster Skrine: 4 years 22 mill (5.5 mill in first season). Skrine played rather well in Pettine’s defense, which is pretty similar to Bowles. He can also play in the slot or outside, which is helpful when you don’t know what to expect out of Dee. If Dee stays healthy then Skrine plays in the slot, and if Dee goes down then Skrine moves outside.

S- Rahim Moore: 4 years 26 mill (6.5 mill in first season). I wanted McCourty originally, but you can’t sign everybody. Moore is a true center fielder with a boatload of potential and I think he’ll come much cheaper than McCourty.

Cap space spent: 39 million

Cap space remaining: 9 million

Draft:

Round 1 pick 6- OLB Shane Ray Missouri. Remember before when I said that I think the Jets go to a 4-man line on 3rd down? Well just imagine Wilk, Shelly, Coples, and Snacks/Douzable on the line with Ray blitzing behind them. Ray should be able to make an immediate impact as a pass rusher day 1 and I think he can develop into a 3 down linebacker in time. This pick is also why I chose to keep Calvin Pace and Babin. Pace will continue to be used on run downs until Ray develops and Babin should be able to mentor Ray in the pass rushing area while still rotating in.

Round 2- OT Jake Fisher Oregon. Next season D’Brick’s cap hit is projected to be 14 mill, so it might be time to move on pending a restructing. Also, the Jets can get out from under overpriced Breno's contract next season. The Jets need to start preparing for the holes that could emerge, and Fisher has ideal size and has already played in a spread offense at Oregon.

Round 3- WR Stefon Diggs Maryland. While the Marshall trade is great in the short term, it isn’t really a long-term fix. There’s not much that Diggs can’t do on the field except stay healthy due to fluky injuries like a lacerated kidney. I think if he would have gone back for another year and played in every game that he’d be a potential first rounder next year, so I’m willing to take a gamble in the 3rd.

Round 4- QB Bryce Petty Baylor. Let me just start this off by saying I’m a big fan of Petty. I think he’s got room to grow and could actually develop into a starter someday. I doubt that he’s there in the 4th, but firstpick had him available in nearly every simulation, so what do I know?
