The Best Trade in the History of the NFL (Total Pipedream)

As you read this, keep in mind that this has come straight out of my imagination. It is highly unlikely, but a chance exists, and if that chance exists, I'll pray for it.

So here's the situation. The Jets are on the clock at pick #6, there's only ten minutes left until the ticket is due, when all of the sudden...

The phone begins ringing.

Maccagnan walks over and answers the phone. No other than Chip Kelly is on the other end.

Chip has called to inquire about a potential trade in order to reach quarterback Marcus Mariota.

After several minutes of back and forth conversation, a trade is in place. A Jets official calls in the trade and Roger Goodell walks up to the podium to announce that a trade has taken place.

As compensation for the #6 overall pick, the Jets receive the Eagles's:

  • 1st round pick (2015, 2016)
  • 2nd round pick (2015, 2016)
  • 3rd round pick (2015)
  • QB Nick Foles

Now here's why, in the best imaginable case scenario, this is the greatest trade in the history of the NFL. The Eagles, with their new found QB of the future, go on to win a great many games, and become a dominant force in the NFC. They terrorize the division and become what the Patriots have been to the AFC East to the NFC East. The Jets then use their new found picks and quarterback to build a team set for year after year of winning 10+ games. With the QB position on the Jets filled with Foles, and Smith (and I'd love Austin Davis and Jake Locker in there as well), the Jets find at least one of the QBs to be a very good player for the team and become "The Guy" that New York has sorely needed for so many years.

Here's where the deal gets even sweeter.

Not only are we able to take our place at the top of the AFC East and hit the Patriots back with 15 years of vengeance, but by helping the Eagles dominate their division, the New York Giants receive much the same treatment that Jets have been receiving for years from the Patriots. A whooping twice a year, and much to the likings of Jet fans, become the little brother in the New York football hierarchy. Finally Jet fans can have full control over bragging rights in New York (And hopefully win three rings so people can stop saying "Yeah but who has more Superbowls") and spend the next 15-20 years winning more games than there are stars in the sky.

What makes this trade so special, is that both parties in the trade benefit so greatly from the trade, and only the other teams in the NFL lose.

Well, that'll never happen.
Till next time!
