Jets Mock Offseason Using Brand New Simulator

Hey everyone, I recently found a really cool tool to use for fans like me who love to do mock offseasons. Go to http://fanspeak.com/mtc/ where you can compete with other teams to sign free agents. They even combine with overthecap.com to give accurate numbers on cap space. So let’s begin…

Notable Cuts:

· Percy Harvin: I am actually in favour of bringing him back given how much cap space the Jets will have in 2015 but I would cut him based on who I would be bringing in.

· Chris Johnson: Just too much money for a guy who didn’t perform as well as we thought he could plus there’s younger and better guys out there.

· Calvin Pace and Jason Babin: Want to get younger at this position and there are guys in the draft and free agency who could do a better job.

· Jeff Cumberland: He’s an okay pass catcher but Jace should be better than him by next season. That leaves him with more responsibility as a blocker which he is terrible at. Just isn’t a good fit.

· Antonio Allen: This one is tough because I’m not quite sure how good he is. He struggled having to change positions and he looked worse playing safety than he did in this rookie year. If Allen plays like he did last year then I think it may be time to move on.

Before I get to the signings, I should state that one problem with this simulator is that you can’t control what the cap hits are going to be when you sign guys to multi-year deals. Ideally I would’ve liked to made bigger cap hits since this team has so much cap space entering 2015. So here are the guys I would like to re-sign….

Reasoning Behind Acquisitions

Randall Cobb: It’s a big contract but it is only for three years. If the Jets want him they are going to have to be the highest bidder cause they won’t be able to sell "we are a Super Bowl calibre team." Cobb will be a great weapon in the slot and can help in the red zone with his 12 TDs this season.

Kareem Jackson: He is arguably a top 20 corner in the NFL right now and will be 27 when the season starts. Would easily be better than any corner the Jets had this season.

Orlando Franklin: Franklin became one of the best guards in the NFL after his position change in the offseason. Aboushi looked promising when he took over for Winters but Colon was a drive killer with all of his penalties. Whoever the quarterback is, they will look a lot better when they have more time in the pocket and Franklin will help make that happen.

Brandon Spikes: The Jets could use a really good cover linebacker but the problem is there aren’t any in the free agent market. I could easily see David Harris being brought back but I would gamble and try to upgrade. Spikes would be a slight upgrade and should be a little bit better than Harris in pass defense.

Rahim Moore: The Jets gave up a lot of big plays this season and that was mostly due to the lack of a true free safety. Calvin Pryor was miscast as playing center field which led to touchdowns. Signing Moore will help Pryor as he can go back to what he does best: playing as an in the box safety. Moore might be famous for allowing a deep touchdown pass against Jacoby Jones and the eventual Super Bowl champion Ravens but Moore has developed in to a very good ball-hawking safety.

Jake Locker: Locker has struggled with the injury bug but I have seen some flashes of his potential. His 2013 season saw him get an 86.7 QB rating but he only played in 7 games. For a one year deal, I think he is worth the risk.

Sam Acho: Acho played under Todd Bowles last season so he should transition well to the Jets. Acho showed what he could do in his rookie season where he got 7 sacks. Unfortunately that is his career high but Acho hasn’t been bad. Acho has +2 Pro Football Focus rating which is higher than guys like Osi Umenyiora and Akeem Ayers. Overall, not an elite player but solid.

Hakeem Nicks: I think this would be a good low risk signing. Nicks should at least be a good depth receiver but he has shown in the past that he can be a starter. Having Decker, Nicks, Cobb and Kerley all out on the field together could be dangerous. With Chan Gailey’s spread offense, it will be important to have depth at this position.

Arthur Moats: I believe that Moats is one of the most underrated players in the league. Moats has always been regarded as a great special teams player and whenever he plays OLB, he has performed. Pro Football Focus gave him a +7.3 rating this season with the Steelers. That rating is higher than Brian Orakpo, Dwight Freeney and Sam Acho (who Moats could challenge for a starting role).

LaMichael James: Could easily see this not working out but there wouldn’t be much of a downside anyway. James could help the team as a punt and kick returner while also contributing as a pass catching RB. Don’t know much about him in pass protection but this article would suggest he isn’t terrible (http://www.49ers.com/news/article-2/RB-LaMichael-James-Steps-up-in-Pass-protection/312539fb-3dc1-4c9d-b6a5-c2ec637cb8bc). I would have James compete with a bunch of guys in training camp and hopefully he can finally fulfill his potential in New York.

Josh Gordy: Gordy is a guy who can help add to the competition in camp by playing corner or safety. Gordy had an okay year with Indianapolis this season and even had to start at corner when Vontae Davis got hurt. I think Gordy would challenge Antonio Allen for a spot on the roster and become a versatile player on the Jets defense.

Greg Warren: I have no clue if Tanner Purdum was to blame for any of the blocked field goals or punts but maybe a new guy can help. Let’s hope Warren can become the Joe Montana of long snappers.

Notables:

· Extend Wilkerson (6 years/$72 million/Cap Hit of $12 million)- Should copy Robert Quinn’s contract.

· Extend Harrison (3 years/$16.5 million/Cap Hit of $5.5 million)- Harrison loves being a Jet, hopefully we can lock up him up and continue the dominance in run defense.

Cap Space: $20,488,025

Draft (Using First Pick)

Round 1 Pick 5 (5) Redskins: Landon Collins, SS, Alabama

1st: Marcus Mariota-Oregon-QB: The offensive system he comes from isn’t ideal but he has proven to me that he has the ability to play at the next level. Mariota can handle pressure by using his legs or stepping up and taking the hit. He’s got a strong arm, high football IQ and has shown me on tape that he can look off his first read (but usually they’re open so he doesn’t have to that much). I would be scared to have Mariota start right away given the difficult transition he would face so that’s where Geno or Locker can step up and prove one last time that they’re franchise QBs.

Round 1 Pick 28 (28) Broncos: Dorial Green-Beckham, WR, Oklahoma
Round 1 Pick 29 (29) Colts: Melvin Gordon, RB, Wisconsin
Round 1 Pick 30 (30) Packers: D'Joun Smith, CB, Florida Atlantic
Round 1 Pick 31 (31) Patriots: Devin Funchess, WR, Michigan
Round 1 Pick 32 (32) Seahawks: Mario Edwards, DE, Florida State
Round 2 Pick 1 (33) Titans: Brett Hundley, QB, UCLA
Round 2 Pick 2 (34) Buccaneers: Nate Orchard, DE, Utah
Round 2 Pick 3 (35) Raiders: A.J. Cann, OG, South Carolina
Round 2 Pick 4 (36) Jaguars: Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, CB, Oregon

2nd: Maxx Williams-Minnesota-TE: This is purely a BPA selection as I see Williams as the best tight end in this year’s class. I am a big Amaro fan so having him paired up with Williams could be dynamic. Williams is very athletic and can block as well so having him in the role that Amaro played this season would work out well. For the long term, an Amaro-Williams duo could create mismatches for years.

3rd: Tevin Coleman-Indiana-RB: I love a running back with great vision and Coleman definitely has this trait. He also has the size and speed to be a lead back in the NFL. Coleman would share carries with Ivory which would hopefully be an upgrade over the Ivory-Johnson combo we saw this season.

4th: Kevin White-TCU-CB: White was very impressive at this year’s Senior Bowl and his former TCU teammate Jason Verrett has shown that size isn’t everything when evaluating CBs. White could challenge Dexter McDougle and Marcus Williams for the slot corner position.

Trade down 10 picks with Houston for an extra 7th

5th: Stefon Diggs-Maryland-WR: Diggs is an athletic freak who caught the attention of many college football fans after his freshman season. Diggs has struggled since then battling injuries and shaky quarterback play but after watching tape you can still see the big game potential he possesses. Here are a couple gifs that showcase what he is capable of doing.

7th: Bryce Hager-Baylor-ILB: Whenever I watched Baylor’s terrible defense I always noticed Hager as the one guy who looked good. Hager is known for his leadership skills and high motor. I think having a mentor like Demario Davis could really help him. At the very least, Hager could play special teams.

7th: Titus Davis-Central Michigan-WR (Practice Squad): Only have seen him play in the crazy Bahamas Bowl where Davis was the player who took the final lateral in for a touchdown. Davis was a very productive player at Central Michigan and has YAC potential to go along with his 6’2’’ frame. As I have said above, this team should have good depth at WR so that Gailey can run his spread offense effectively.

So after all this, here is what would be the projected 53 man roster:

Depth Chart:

QB- Jake Locker, Geno Smith, Marcus Mariota

RB- Chris Ivory, Tevin Coleman, LaMichael James

FB- John Conner

WR- Eric Decker, Hakeem Nicks, Randall Cobb, Jeremy Kerley, Stefon Diggs, Shaq Evans

TE- Jace Amaro, Maxx Williams, Zach Sudfeld

OL- D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Oday Aboushi , Nick Mangold, Orlando Franklin, Breno Giacomini, Ben Ijalana, Brian Winters, Dakota Dozier, Dalton Freeman

DL- Sheldon Richardson, Damon Harrison, Muhammad Wilkerson, Leger Douzable, T.J. Barnes, I.K. Enemkpali

OLB- Quinton Coples, Sam Acho, Arthur Moats, Trevor Reilly

FS- Rahim Moore, Jaiquawn Jarrett, Josh Gordy

So Jet fans, what do you think? I really recommend using the fan speak simulator as it made this process seem much more realistic than any other mock season I have ever done before.
