Make It Nasty

First off I’d like to thank everyone for their views and comments on my first post. One of my favorite things to do on this site is to read the views of everyone and take their thoughts into consideration when forming my own opinion. We have some very intelligent writers and readers at this site and it has really helped me gain a better understanding of certain aspects of the game.

Today I wanted to talk about something that’s not on the x’s & o’s side of it but was still a big part of winning games. That something is confidence, or positive thinking, or one of the many other ways of telling someone you’ve got what it takes. We can all agree that ever since Rex took over the Jets have become very confident and aren’t afraid to tell anyone how good they are. This brashness has rub some fans the wrong way, especially since it does not seem to ever end. There is a reason for all this though and it’s a good one, winners are winners long before they’ve won a single thing.

In my first post I mentioned that I’m not the most knowledgeable person on everything football, but I am extremely knowledgably on the sport of professional bull riding. Now these are two very different sports yet they do have some similarities. Both take some extra sized, let’s say globes to keep it family friendly, you want to catch the ball over the middle with Calvin Pryor lurking you better have some monster globes. If you think you want to strap yourself to the back of some of the greatest athletes in the world you definitely better have some monster globes and a nasty attitude.

If you want to succeed in any sport you have to believe that you can before it’ll happen. A team or person must believe that they are a super bowl contender or world champion before they’ll ever become one. When I first started riding bulls I attended a camp coached by Gary Leffew. Gary was a past world champion and the most positive thinking person a guy could meet. Gary believed if you always stayed positive and acted like you could hang with the best then eventually you would make that thinking a reality. Every time I crawl onto the back of those one ton monsters I know I can ride with the best, even if I get bucked off I know I can ride with best because I believe it and that belief drives me to be the nastiest, rankest bull rider I can be.

So when I hear Dee Milliner say," "The best corner in the league? Me," I don’t hear a ridiculous statement I hear a guy that believes in himself. When I hear players talk like that I think of bull riders behind the chutes telling themselves they’re the best, slapping their own face because they’re so high on adrenaline, because with that positive attitude comes a nastiness out on the field that makes winners. Not every player has to act like that to be great but there are a lot of people who need to think like that, to believe in themselves before they can become the best they can be. If the Jets start to play half as good as they believe they can, not even the Seahawks can stop them.

I’ve included a video of JB Mauney riding Bushwacker, who in my mind is the greatest athlete in the world. Now I don’t think JB is the best bull rider from a technique standpoint but he rides with such confidence and nastiness that he rides more unrideable bulls then anyone.
