I can't believe how badly the Jet fans turned on Cromartie, whose only real crime in the beginning was a reputation for being soft, something he completely dispelled, at least in my opinion, playing through clearly a very rough injury season.
Antonio Cromartie claims to have ran a 4.36 forty during an offseason workout. It's obviously not an official time, but Cromartie looks fully healthy after playing through a hip injury in 2013. The Cardinals are counting on a bounce back year from Cromartie, giving him a one-year, $3.25 million deal to bookend shadow CB Patrick Peterson. Cromartie was clocked at 4.47 during the 2006 Combine. Jun 27 - 7:19 PM
I have a feeling that Cromartie is going to significantly outperform Patterson by a wide margin (he is one season away from having arguably the best statistical CB performance in the league). He matured a ton as a Jet, and I was pretty disappointed to see him not rewarded for gutting it out in 2013. This all seems part of Idzik's whole dumpster diving genius. To me Idzik feels like a geek who read Moneyball a few too many times, and just loves thinking that he can find damaged or undervalued players that suddenly are going to be diamonds, saving pennies along the way. When in truth, when players are journeymen players, when players have repeated problems with injury and missing games, or with the law, there generally is a reason for it. Sometimes you can find something special, but really I wish he would stop trying to shave dollars by making a bunch of long bets.
Dimitri Patterson, by the way, ran a 4.6 40 for the NFL draft, as far as I could look up.
I know this isn't going to be a popular post, but Cromartie grew on me as a Jet, and his experience in the defense and his top end speed would have added something to Pryor, who is the golden boy, in his rookie season. Maybe the Jets know something medically I (and Arizona) don't, but I wanted to see him as a Jet. I don't like when vets put the time in, and pay the price of pain, and are tossed away to save a few bucks. I'm pulling for Cromartie this year.
