Four Safeties (Pryor, Dix, Bucannon and Ward) were drafted in the first round.
Thats something nobody predicted, but in retrospect we should have seen it coming because the NFL has always been a copy-cat league and the LOB (Legion of Boom) has officially put the Safety back in play as a coveted position again. Thats what four Safeties in RD 1 says, loud and clear. The Safeties are back in style!
Of course it should be noted that John Idzik was a part of the Seattle brain-trust that helped to make the Safety a trendy Day 1 Pick again. I can't recall the last time as many as four Safeties were taken in RD 1, but thats what happens when a team wins the Super Bowl and their Safeties are an integral part of their success, arguably the catalysts.
That said, kudos to the Jets for being ahead of the curve and taking the best of the bunch, the first Safety off the board when they had their pick of the litter. Pryor absolutely fits the LOB mold. He's better than advertised in coverage, plays a lot faster than he clocks, flying all over the field making plays, and he is a big-time intimidator too, the kind of Safety who puts genuine fear into WR's. If you are not careful this guy will blast you to kingdom come. To steal an old phrase from Muhammad Ali, this guy will hit you so hard that by the time you wake-up your clothes will be out of style.
