Over the last few months the experts who cover the NFL have been putting together mock drafts almost weekly. As soon as the season ended most draft gurus had the Jets nabbing a reciver in the first round. Possibly Odell Beckham Jr. of LSU or even Bradin Cooks of Oregon State. However after the first wave of free agent signings it has become more clear to people around the league that the Jets have a glaring hole at the corner back position. Even though last year they took Dee Milner out of Alabama, who was regarded by many as the best CB in the draft, it really would not surprise me if the Jets took another corner to put opposite of Milner. I know what many Jets fans are thinking, "not more defense." and as a Jets fan myself I can oblige. However there is one CB in this draft that I think the Jets could and should take at 18. His name is Darqueze Dennard. Dennard was a three year starter for the Mark Dantonio lead defense at Michigan State. In his last season at Lansing Dennard was a consensus All-American and the Jim Thorpe Award winner, as the nations top defensive back. Also, he tallied 14 pass breakups as well as 4 interceptions in his senior campaign. And the year before that, when he was just a junior, he tallied similar numbers as he had 10 pass break up's and 3 interceptions. Now I know 14 and 10 pass break up's do not seem like a lot and your right its not. However teams never threw to his side of the field and when they did they paid for it. I was a little skeptical too about taking yet another corner in the first round. But after watching some tape on the kid I now know the Jets should take Dennard with the 18 overall pick in this year's draft. Just do me a favor and go look at the highlight reel this kid put together for the Spartans. It is unbelievable the things he did last year. And if you can pair him up with Dee Milner, who came on strong late last season, the Jets could have the best young tandem at corner back in the NFL in a few years.
