Early Prediction: 53 Man Roster

I have my own blog that I started with a friend of mine, and he recently posted who he believes will make the 53 come September. It's very early, but its always fun to make predictions, and to see what others think.

Offense: 24

3 QB: Michael Vick, Geno Smith, Tajh Boyd - The competition between Tajh Boyd and Matt Simms will be fierce but ultimately I think Boyd fits the system better and will win a roster spot, which means an end to the Matt Simms era.

4 RB: Chris Johnson, Chris Ivory, Bilal Powell, Daryl Richardson - Jets go pretty deep at the RB spot due to having a lot of talent there. It will be tough for each one of these guys to find carries but with the injuries in todays NFL it won’t hurt to have 4 capable runners on the team.

1 FB: Tommy Bohannon - Bohannon will be looking to build on a good rookie campaign

3 TE: Jace Amaro, Jeff Cumberland, Zach Sudfeld - Jets have 3 capable guys at this position and barring something unforeseen they should be comfortable going into the season with these 3

5 WR: Eric Decker, Jeremy Kerley, Stephen Hill, Jalen Saunders, Shaq Evans - Really considered going with 6 wideouts but ultimately the last few roster spots are going to come down to special teams and the Jets will most likely keep a CB/S before they keep a receiver that probably won’t see any snaps on offense.

8 OL: Brian Winters, Willie Colon, Dokata Dozier, Oday Aboushi, Nick Mangold, D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Breno Giacomini, Ben Ijalana - Jets go with 8 on the O-line which is one less than last year but some of these guys have some versatility and position flex so they should be fine with 8.

Defense: 26

5 DL: Muhammad Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson, Damon Harrison, Kenrick Ellis, Leger Douzable - The Jets will stick with the same exact D-line group as last year which looks to continue to solidify it’s spot as one of the best 3-4 DL groups in the NFL.

5 OLB: Quinton Coples, Calvin Pace, Antwan Barnes, Trevor Reilly, Garrett McIntyre - Unfortunately for the Jets I see this as one of the weakest position groups. Quinton Coples is a bad fit as a 3-4 OLB and Calvin Pace has been their best rusher and is getting up there in age. This is a position of need going forward in the coming years for sure.

5 ILB: David Harris, Demario Davis, Jeremiah George, Nick Bellore, Steele Divito - Harris, Davis, and George will probably be the only guys that see snaps but Bellore and Divito make the team due to special teams ability.

6 CB: Dee Milliner, Dimitri Patterson, Kyle Wilson, Darrin Walls, Dexter McDougle, Ellis Lankster - The Jets will go really heavy at corner and still have to cut 6th round draft choice Brandon Dixon from the 53 man roster. Lankster and Dixon will battle it out for the final spot but Lankster is the Jets special teams ace and is too valuable to let go. If Dixon can prove to be a valuable special teams player he could find a way onto the roster in place of either Lankster or one of the safeties.

5 S: Calvin Pryor, Dawan Landry, Antonio Allen, Rontez Miles, Jaiquawn Jarrett - The Jets safety group is filled with hard hitters. Miles and Jarrett will make their bones on special teams.

Special Teams: 3

1 K: Nick Folk - Folk was one of the Jets most consistent players last year.

1 P: Ryan Quigley - Quigley is the only punter on the roster and looks to be a lock to make the team, unless the team brings in an alternative.

1 LS: Tanner Purdum - Purdom has snapped the ball with great consistency and there is no reason to make a change here.

Practice Squad: 8

DT Kerry Hyder - Hyder will have a good preseason but he offers nothing on special teams. Jets will keep him around to develop him as a future rotational nose tackle.

LB Nick Dimarco - Demarco will be kept around as a developmental linebacker.

WR Quincy Enunwa - Enunwa is not ready yet to contribute on offense to an NFL team and he doesn’t offer much on special teams so the Jets cut him but bring him onto the practice squad.. He could get called up to the 53 man roster quickly though. He is one injury away from seeing the field.

FB Chad Young - Young is a small guy but he will blow you up in the hole. He is the type of guy Rex Ryan loves and they will find a way to keep him around.

CB Brandon Dixon - Dixon is a wildcard here because I think there is a good chance if they cut him another team will scoop him up and they won’t be able to put him on their practice squad. Dixon is very raw with his coverage ability and will not make the 53 but if the Jets get a chance to keep him around I am sure they will.

OT Brent Qvale - Qvale will be kept around as a developmental project at tackle.

OLB Ik Enemkpali - Enemkpali is not a great fit for the 3-4 and there is a chance he could get picked up but a 4-3 team but I think he is a hard worker who will endear himself with the coaching staff therefore the team will want to keep him around and see if he can fit in somehow in the future.

TE Terrence Miller - Miller won’t make the team but he too is only one injury away from a call up and getting on the field.
