Camp Position Competition with Predictions and 2014 Depth Chart

I have identified what I believe will be the most interesting position battles. My predictions are naturally subject to debate:

  1. Smith vs. Vick for the starting QB position. Smith is the potential future and Vick is the proven vet. Smith will have to show improvement from last year as Vick has already proven himself in Marty’s system. Prediction: Smith shows enough in close competition to maintain starting position. Vick is the #2 QB for the 2014 season.

  2. Boyd vs. Simms for 3rd QB position. Boyd was once thought of as a potential first round draft choice. Simms was impressive last year in preseason. Prediction: Boyd shows enough potential that he wins the position and Simms is released.

  3. Bohanon vs. Young for the FB position. Last year’s 7th round draft choice vs. the UDFA. I had high hopes for Bohanon but was unimpressed last year. Young looks like a beast from the tape I have seen (admittedly a highlight tape). Prediction: Young knocks enough guys on their ass and catches enough balls out of the backfield during camp and preseason to win the position and Bohanon is released.

  4. Enunwa, Evans, Gates, Hill and Nelson for #2, #3 and #4 outside WR positions. Hill will have to play well in training camp and preseason to stick. This is his now or never moment. Hill and Gates are the two with the speed to threaten the top of opposing defenses. Enunwa, Evans and Nelson also have some speed but are more position type receivers. Enunwa looks like he will be a bit of a project. Prediction: Hill shows growth and wins the #2 position. Evans shows that the Jets know more about football than I do and wins the #3 position. Nelson continues to catch everything thrown to him and wins the #4 position. Enunwa is placed on the practice squad for development and Gates is released.

  5. Ford, Salas and Saunders for #2 SWR position. Ford has had success in the past as both a receiver and returner. Salas has flashed potential. Saunders is the rookie with speed who has had collegiate success as both a receiver and returner. Prediction: Kerley is a free agent next season and I think it is possible the Jets will keep 3 slot receivers for a total of seven receivers on the roster. I think Ford will make the team and return kicks and Saunders will also make the team and return punts. Both will see time as well in the slot and in multiple WR sets. Salas is the odd man out and will be released.

  6. Aboushi, Campbell, Colon, Dozier, Ijalana and Winters for 2 starting OG positions and 3 backup OL positions. Prediction: Colon and Winters win the starting OG positions. Dozier shows he will eventually replace Colon. Ijalana and Aboushi who can both play OG and OT win the other two backup positions. Campbell is the odd man out and is released.

  7. Freeman vs. Schlauderaff for the backup OC position. Jets are high on Freeman and so am I. Prediction: Freeman is the new backup at center and Schlauderaff is released.

  8. Cunningham, Enemkpali and Reilly for 2 OLB positions. Cunningham is a former second round draft choice with experience. Enemkpali and Reilly are rookies. Enemkpali was drafted ahead of Reilly but I believe he needs more development. Prediction: Cunningham and Reilly win the positions and Enemkpali is placed on the practice squad for development.

  9. Goodson vs. Supreme Court. Prediction: I think the Jets will only carry 3 RB’s and 1 FB this year (they plan on carrying additional ILB depth – George). Prediction: Goodson will be released.

  10. Dixon, Dowling, Lankster, Patrick, Reeves and Walls for 2 CB positions. Prediction: Dixon shows enough potential that Idzik fears losing him if placed on the practice squad – he makes the team. Dowling remains healthy and shows why the Pats drafted him in the second and he also makes the team. Surprisingly Lankster, Patrick and Walls are released. Reeves is signed to the practice squad for development.

  11. Allen, Bush, Jarrett and Landry for 1 starting and 2 backup safety positions. Prediction: Allen continues to improve as he has done every year and wins the starting position opposite of Pryor. Jarrett and Landry win the backup positions and Bush is released.

  12. Quigley vs. Hornsey for punter position. I have ben a fan of Hornsey since day 1. We get a new punter for 2014.
