The secondary is arguably the most talked about unit of the NYJ. We hear many things about Rex Ryan's defense and what type of player he likes in his secondary. We know he likes to have one high safety and press man coverage with minimal safety help. We also know he is a great defensive mind, and has the ability to adapt. This team does not have the players required to run Rex's typical defense. Will he adapt? or will he put square pegs in round holes? We actually have excellent personnel to run a cover-2 in the secondary, but that will probably not happen
At Corner #1, we're gonna throw Dee Milliner out there and see what he's got. We drafted him to replace Revis (whether Idzik admits it or not), now lets see him do his thing. Our second perimeter corner is a spot up for grabs. Does wilson slide outside? Does Dmitri Patterson get it? The rookie McDougle? or the dark horse who I think would be the best choice for right now Darrin Walls. It'll probably be Mcdougle or Patterson, leaving Wilson to the slot where he played real well last year.
To me, Round 1 pick Calvin Pryor has the makings of an All-Pro Strong Safety. He will probably begin his career as a Free Safety though due to the lack of coverage ability and range of the safeties on our current roster. Those who say "Rex Ryans scheme doesnt have a Strong or Free Safety" are somewhat ill-informed. The responsibilities of a FS and SS vary no matter what you call them on your depth chart. I want my SS to be at least a decent zone coverage man, with good range and capability to man-cover a slot receiver or TE (much like Antonio Allen). For my FS, I want fast, smart, rangy player who can diagnose plays in front of them and prevent deep throws. Can read the QB's eyes and get a good jump on the throw, can close in and get there, and come from up top to help the press-corner with coverage. An ideal FS should be as fast as a WR and agile as a CB, he should be an extension of the coach on the field as well as everyones . I dont know if this player is on the roster right now.
I wish we couldve taken a Free Safety type. With our recent pass defense, I'd rather have my safeties be weaker in run support than in pass defense. This is why I think Wilson should move to FS for now, sometimes playing slot corner, acting as a poor mans Tyrann Mathieu. With Pryor at SS and Milliner and Walls on the outside, Dmitri+mcdougle backing up and playing some slot.
Let me know what you guys think
