brave new world

Sunday night, recovering, after the first round and the pick thursday, the second round and the pick friday, and picks picks picks all day saturday, i took a minute to reflect on just what the jets have managed to accomplish so far in the off season. coming off a five hundred season, with tons of money to spend on free agent acquisitons and twelve choices in this year's draft, the jets were well poised to address areas of need; but there were also risks associated with the facts that those needs existed in the first place. sure, john idzik created cap space by cutting expensive and non performing veterans and stockpiled draft picks. but there was also a risk associated making sure that the round pegs dont fit into the square holes. creating the purchasing power is one thing; finding ways to productively expend the resources is another.

starting with last year's free agent acquisitions and draft picks, however, i think john idzik has established that this team will not only be signficantly defined by executive leadership, but perhaps more importantly, that the jets, my jets, your jets, OUR jets, are not going to go down without a fight. this year it all started with signing decker. and continued with chris johnson, two prominent veterans who will contribute strength and stability in critical areas of need on offense. the philosophy continued with this year's draft, characterized prinicpally by sheer number of picks certainly, but much more so than any other draft in jet history, by talent. by leadership. by football ability. and perhaps most imporantly, by SPEED. there are, consequently, no sentimental choices in this draft; everyone here appears to be able to play football, as opposed to being a good athlete, a good guy, a marginal whatever that deserves a shot. those days are gone, when it comes to player personnel, its clear to me that john idzik will not tolerate mediocrity at any level. which is a good thing, not necessarily true under previous regimes. this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. the start of a brave new world....

think about the jet strategy and approach to this year's draft. we had multiple needs, at wide receiver, tight end, safety, corner, inside linebacker, and many wanted a quarterback. so what did idzik do? took the bpa, a player the jets had apparently been looking at for months, with the first pick, got the best young safety on the planet. next? jace amaro, tight end problem SOLVED. wide receiver? one tough little mother saunders, and a guy to me who looks like a potential prototype shaq evans, plus another from nebraska. receivers done. how about george? reilly? IK? taj BOYD for goodness sakes, he could have been, arguably a second rounder we got him with a sixth. again, th e common denominator for me is the fact that none of these players are novelties. most of them run like hell, and ALL of them have proven they can actually play football. that hasnt always been true in jet history. congratulations to john idzik on a job well done. its fine to place dreams in the sky, but this guy has now put the foundations under them. let's all take a minute to reflect and recover, because soon enough

the jets are going back to work...
