People are over the place claiming that this was reach, a sleeper.
Let me give you one example why you always take the player you want when you want him. Russel Wilson.
Seattle could have waited until the seventh round and most likely have found him waiting, he was a major reach, a true sleeper. Expected to be undrafted by most, given late round grades at best. Seattle loved him, made sure that no one would have him and took him on the third round. I actually laughed at this pick, my coworker was surprised when his beloved Seahwaks took him. The BPA on your board is the BPA for you, you take him when he is available.
But do I say he is a good value in the third round?
First, this is almost a complete player at corner, heady, always aware and expecting the play. He covered Watkins in 2012 and did a very good job.
Second, he can play almost any style, he can press, cover, zone. People say he is not that fast but watch his tape, he closes in on the play very quickly.
Third, he can tackle. He is sometimes pushed away from the ball carrier but always makes the effort. He is a true tackler, uses his arms and body to wrap up the carrier.
Fourth, good hands. He can catch the ball. And is very good at jamming the ball so the receiver can't catch it.
Now for the bad: He missed most of last year with an injury. Always bad but never a deal breaker. His footwork is sloppy, could use some more refinement there. But I look at Richard Sherman and I see a duck/penguin hybrid. So I am not so sure footwork is all that now.
Yes, he was rated as a later round player but you never know if someone else was also looking at him. The Jets pulled the trigger when they thought it was best. I have been highly critical of Idzik but I have to say that this draft has me stocked.
Here is also a hidden value for McDougle, he knows Sammy Watkins, played against him. The Jets now face him twice a year.
This team is not playoff ready, it is been built. McDougle is a very nice piece to have and build a defense with. This is now a young secondary. Upgrade the linebackers and watch out.
