Fan GM's vs. John Idzik

What Jet fans wanted was for us to use free agency to acquire young talent to improve our team for both the immediate and long-term improvement of our team. There were obvious holes on our team that needed to be addressed. Most fans, including myself, identified as WR, CB, OG, OT, and TE.

I will first say most fans are happy with the re-signings of Folk, Cumberland, Douzable, Walls, and Lankster. I myself don't care for Lankster. I would also say that most fans are happy with the signings of Decker and Vick. The fans thoughts on Giacomini are mixed. The top-tier OT's and Howard would have cost too much so I personally am not opposed to this signing. I would also say that most fans are happy or have no problem with the camp competition signings of Patrick, Reeves, and Ford.

What angers fans on the anti-Idzik side of the fence is his not acting in the first phase of free agency when there were opportunities to improve our team with reasonable contracts. It is as if he decided before free agency began that he was going to wait to find bargains after the first week had passed. As was mentioned earlier there were no bargains to be had at OT. I also believe that there were no missed opportunities at TE. What was missed was the opportunity to sign young talented players at both the CB and OG positions.

Alterraun Verner publicly stated before free agency began that he was not looking to get paid $9-$10 mil per year. He wanted to be respected. He also publicly stated that he would like to play for the Jets. If Idzik had been proactive and aggressive and gotten him to New York for a visit before anywhere else, I believe he and Rex could have got him to sign for similar money that he got from Tampa Bay. What did Idzik miss on? How about a 25 year old pro bowl CB who signed for 4yrs 25.5 million with only the first year salary guaranteed.

Idzik could have also signed a young OG to a reasonable contract. Jon Asamoah is 26 years old. He signed with the Falcons for 5 years 22.5 mil. I would also been happy with signing Geoff Schwartz who signed with the hated Giants. He is 27 and signed a 4 year $16.8 mil contract.

The difference between Verner's first year salary cap hit of $8,250,000 and Patterson's $3 mil is $5,250,000 (year 2-4 by the way is only $4,250,000, 6,750,000, and $6,500,000). The difference between Asamoah's first year salary cap hit of $2,800,000 and Colon's $2 mil is $800,000. If you take of $6,250,000 from our current $23 million you are still left with approximately $17 million to carry forward.

If Idzik had not stood idle at the very beginning of free agency and signed Verner, Asamoah, along with Decker and the rest of his signing we would be signing his praises right now. His inactivity in the beginning of free agency has left holes now the can only HOPED to be filled through the draft.

So who wins? The answer to that is nobody. Idzik doesn't win and the Jet fans surely don't win. I hope this first time GM has learned something from his mistake.
