When it comes to the safety position, the Jets have been using the stop-gap method to fill the position for years. We really haven't had a franchise safety since Kerry Rhodes and Jim Leonhard were on the team, but Rex Ryan's ability to get the most out of his D has masked that need fairly well.
Then I think, "How much better would our D be if we actually had a top-notch safety?" There are three top talents that will likely go in the first and early second rounds; Jimmie Ward, Calvin Pryor and HaSean Clinton-Dix. The Jets are more likely to go for a WR or CB with those first two picks so I wouldn't expect them to get one of those three guys.
However, with this being such a deep draft, there is talent at most positions that will fall into the 4th, 5th and 6th rounds. A guy that I'm looking for the Jets to target is Alabama safety, Vinnie Sunseri. At 5'11", 210, Sunseri is one of the most underrated players in the entire draft in my opinion. His football instincts are second-to-none; he's one of those guys that brings immediate smarts and finesse to a secondary. He reminds me of a more physical Jim Leonhard.
His ACL injury knocked him off the map for a while, but I think he's someone who could turn into a quality starter. The Jets' secondary that has gone through both Landry brothers in two years and only goes as deep as Antonio Allen and Josh Bush. When we get to the 4th round, gimme Sunseri.
