A lot of fans are suggesting that we should trade up for prospects like Sammy Watkins and Khalil Mack. The risk associated with such a move is too big. We would have to waste another year of rebuilding if any of these two players don't pan out. Even if they do play at a high level, trading up will cost the Jets at least a 2nd round pick which is a crucial pick. Would you rather have Sammy Watkins (in 1st round after trading up) or Marquise Lee (1st round) + Jace Amaro (in 2nd round). Would you rather have Khalil Mack or Dee Ford + Jordan Mathews?
The Jets are constantly linked to WRs, CBs and safeties for the first pick. Players like Cooks, Beckham, Lee, Gilbert, Dennard, Dix and Pryor are all nominees strong nominees to be our first pick.
If the Jets somehow manage to trade to the 23rd-28th pick they will definitely be able to snatch one of these players. In fact it is almost a certainty that cooks, beckham or Lee would be available by that time. The difference between these three receivers is not that huge and they all belong in the same tier. This is exactly why the Jets should trade down with their pick. Trading down would give the Jets another 3rd round pick that can be really useful without affecting our first round selection. The depth of the WR position in this draft works in our favor if we trade down.
Think about what that third round pick can mean to us. A Troy Niklos, Colt Lyerla, Jarvis Landry, Gabe Jackson are all potential players we can add.
Bottom Line is picking Cooks, Beckham or Lee with our 18th pick would be a waste because at least one of these three talents will be available in the picks from 23-28. (If they aren't then there are other great options like Calvin Pryor or Dee Ford). We need to use the depth of this WR class and trade down.
