Of course Aldon Smith is still a Niner, of course the likelihood of a player with 42 sacks in 3 years being cut is slim, of course the Niners would probably prefer to fix him than cut him.
But what if they don't?
The precedent has been set for releasing very talented players. DeSean Jackson hasn't been arrested and yet he was cut outright. The 49ers have a culture and deep rooted concept of how their players should act. I'm not advocating for his release (well actually yes I am because I'd love him as a Jet) but simply stating that if he were to be released it wouldn't be the first.
For the Jets this would make a lot of sense. Antwan Barnes is coming off injury, we don't know how good Calvin Pace still is, Coples may or may not explode so there's a high amount of uncertainty. This also removes the burden of having to draft an outside linebacker or even a corner back in the 1st round because our front 7 would be so terrifying. This allows the Jets to go either BPA or fill that need at TE/WR with a OBJ/Cooks/Ebron or whoever else tickles your fancy.
