Using the 2006-2011 Drafts to Value the TE Position

Hey everyone, with many people mocking the Jets tight ends like Ebron, Amaro, Seferian-Jenkins and so on, I wondered what round was best value for a tight end. I looked at rounds 1 to 4 from the draft class of 2006 to 2011. I excluded the 2012 and 2013 draft class because they are still in the early development phase. I decided to separate players by focusing on their career best season (in terms of receiving yards). Below are the results:

0-399 Yard Season

400-699 Yard Season

700-899 Yard Season

900+ Yard Season

Round 1

Jermaine Gresham

Brandon Pettigrew

Marcedes Lewis

= 83%

Vernon Davis

= 17%

Round 2

Kyle Rudolph

Lance Kendricks

John Carlson

Anthony Fasano

Tony Scheffler

= 46%

Fred Davis

Martellus Bennett

Zach Miller

= 27%

Rob Gronkowski

= 9%

Round 3

Travis Beckum

Brad Cottam

Craig Stevens

Matt Spaeth

Leonard Pope

David Thomas

Dominique Byrd

= 57%

Rob Housler

Ed Dickson

Tony Moeaki

= 21%

Jared Cook

Jermichael Finley

= 14%

Jimmy Graham

= 7%

Round 4

Luke Stocker

Clay Harbor

Shawn Nelson

Anthony Hill

Martin Rucker

Derek Fine

Martrez Milner

Garrett Mills

= 50%

Dennis Pitta

Garrett Graham

Jacob Tamme

Scott Chandler

Julius Thomas

Owen Daniels

Jordan Cameron

Aaron Hernandez

Obviously there is more to the tight end position than getting receiving yards but in general, I thought this chart did a good job at separating the great tight ends from the bad ones. This leaves me with one question: Is Eric Ebron or Jace Amaro a good first round pick for the Jets assuming they fall under the 700-899 yard category like many of the recent first round tight ends?
