Scouting the Draft: Lamarcus Joyner FS/CB Florida State

Joyner is a little smaller than you would ideally like at FS (HT: 5’8"; WT: 184 lbs) but the guy is a playmaker. In 2013 Joyner registered 5.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and two interceptions.

To quote his FSU Defensive Coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, "He's a really good man-to-man guy. He can play the ball in the deep part of the field. He can tackle in space. He's a great Blitzer, just an all-around good football player."

Joyner started all 27 games at safety over the previous two seasons, but moved to CB prior to the start of his senior season and alternated between cornerback and nickel back. Joyner has very good footwork and his short area quickness is as good as any CB in the draft. Has also played consistently well in the run game too and is a real menace whenever he lines up close to the line of scrimmage.

His versatility and skill set makes him an ideal fit for the stereotypical Rex Ryan blitzing DB. As a Jet fan, I would be really excited to see how Ryan could use this guy. For me Joyner is best suited to the nickel position at the next level rather than an outside corner so drafting him to play opposite Dee on the outside would not be a good idea. Joyner could certainly play FS for us and it’s at that position I would look at playing him. His instincts and awareness in coverage borders on the elite for me and his great tackling makes him a very good last line of Defense. Joyner wouldn't have the size to deal with TE’s so that would be a concern with him playing FS. But that’s the only real negative (it may be a bigger concern for some but it’s something I personally could live with) on using him at FS.

The obvious comparison for Joyner is the "Honey Badger" Tyrann Mathieu but without any of the off the field stuff. Joyner has some of the most impressive game tape I've seen from any of the DB’s in this year’s class. At the moment I see him as a late 1st rounder on talent but his lack of prototypical size would knock him down a bit. Would I take him at 18? No but in the 2nd round I think it is well worth using the 49th pick on this guy.

Here’s some highlight’s of the Heat Seeking Missile that is Lamarcus Joyner. and also Footage from the Clemson game to give you that extra feel for the guy. Enjoy and feel free to post your thoughts below.
