A few days ago, the Titans released Ryan Fitzpatrick, effectively swapping him out in favor of Charlie Whitehurst. I am not sure what the logic behind that move is, but the good news for the Jets is that puts a starting caliber quarterback on the market. Fitzpatrick is not any sort of long-term answer at the position, but he is an experienced starter who has performed reasonably well under less than ideal circumstances. If that is not exactly what we've talking about as veteran competition for the starting quarterback gig, I don't know what is.
A seventh round pick back in 2005, it is far to say that Fitzpatrick has exceeded expectations thus far in his career. He is a 31 year old journeyman who is now looking to play for his 5th club. His most successful time came in Buffalo where he posted 3 consecutive 3000 yard passing seasons without really picking anybody apart or wowing at the position. Last year in Tennessee, he filled in for an injured Jake Locker and the best that can be said is he managed the situation. He is not a guy who is going to beat you with his arm or really turn a franchise around, but he is a high percentage passer who has experience starting in the NFL.
Considering the other options that have been available at quarterback on the market, this may be the best that we will see. So what do you think. Would you like to see the Jets sign Fitzpatrick? And if so, how much do you think he is worth?
