Just a few things that i wanted to point out since we are in the middle of Mock Season.
Messing around on Over The Cap with their salary cap calculator that allows you to be the GM and decide Cuts, Resigns, Extensions etc. i was able to fairly easily give the jets 40-45m in available cap space after resigning Reed, Colon, Folk to about 1.75m a year, and Howard to 3.5m a year, also a bunch of other guys as well to small 1-2 year contracts.
The important thing about this though is the following year we still have 60m+ in cap space while picking up Mo's Option, and next year assuming no one we sign this off season blows up in our face we will have no egregious contracts on the books outside of our former pro-bowl o-lineman Nick who only has 3m guaranteed left for his last two years, and Brick who we will have to deal with through 2015 before his contract becomes manageable.
The other thing that very few people have really brought up when talking about the current crop of free agents is the idea that Idzik has the ability to play with the money per year these guys are getting so while we may sign (in a dream world) Orakpo Byrd Ward and Maclin for 30m a year total that could be 20m this year, 25 next year, and 35 the year after that for example.
Idzik did work with personal and talent before us, and as we all know he is a very good numbers/cap guy.
Also that dead money from Cro, Sanchez, Tone, and possibly Harris all comes back next year and will be about 12m in guaranteed cap room we will have next year no matter what we do this off season
My overall point is with guys like Geno on his rookie contract, Mo not needing his big payday for at least another season we are set up now and into the future better than anyone is really giving credit for.
If anyone has brought up this point before i apologize i try and read most of the posts about the off season this just felt like a prevailing theme that hadn't been brought up through what i had been reading and thought it was worth bringing up.
