New York Jets:Blueprints to Being a Contender Next Season

Right now as I see and I could be mistaken the jets are not to far from being legit contenders this year and years to come we are a very young team on defense and offense and adding a couple of veterans and rookie pieces this offseason I see us being the team we were a couple of years ago when we made the AFC championship back to back. Geno Smith still needs a lot of work but the guy also managed to help us get 8-8 with very little help. Our secondary defense could also use some but our front was one of the best in the league and with that being said I think this offseason will be the start of something great for our franchise.

CUTS

Mark Sanchez- By cutting Sanchez we would be making back $8 million and that is money that is much needed else where the best option for both parties is cutting and letting mark play else where with a fresh start

Antonio Cromartie- Even after being selected to the pro bowl for his second consecutive year I feel like his time with the jets is done he cost way to much and we would save $9 million by cutting him before march

Santonio Holmes- This is a no brainer very little production after signing his contract with us, hes a cancer in the locker room by cutting him we save $8 million

Mike Goodson- Im kinda iffy on this one up until his injury he showed promise but with his off the field issues and the possibility of him not returning to form I think we should cut him and even though it wouldn't be big money every dollar counts

With these cuts being done and our current cap situation before the cuts we would have big money to spend in free agency

FREE AGENCY

Jeremy Maclin- I see Maclin returning to form after his injury before it he was very good for philly and he will also be cheap to pay I think we can sign him for 3 year 12 million dollar contract.

Tj Ward- Tj is a hard hitter both would immediately help our poor secondary he wouldn't be costly like Jarius Byrd would be and Tj is also a pro bowler by signing Tj we save that could be used on other free agents

Brian Orakpo- The best player in free agency at a position we could use an upgrade and even though we can address this in the draft you also have to look at the possibility by signing Tj we could save money and we would have a very strong possibility of signing Orakpo and having the best defensive front in the NFl

By signing these guys we aren't contenders yet we still have to sign our lower end free agents who could get the job done going forward

RESIGNING

Nick Folk-Hes not gonna be asking big time money but he wont be signing cheap but he is a priority after showing he is one of the best in the league

Jeff Cumberland- showed flashes of potential this season and paring him with another Tight End in the draft would be good for Geno

Austin Howard- has done a very solid job for us at tackle and it would be smart to resign him

Willie Colon- Love this guy, love the way he plays, love everything he also will be cheap to bring back after his injury late in the season also done a solid job for us

Leger Douzable- We need him back shown he can play under the guys above when needed and we could use him for depth

EXTENSIONS

Muhammed Wilkerson- Basically the best player in our franchise right now has a bright future and locking him up now would be good.

Following this first half of the blueprint I think our team has improved but we also have the draft and by drafting the right guys John Idzik could turn off franchise around for better we need to address a couple of positions still and we have 8 picks in the not counting compensation picks either

DRAFT

Round 1 Eric Ebron UNC TE - this is the type of guy we need on the team hes a big target and adding him would improve our offense I just think that Marqise Lee wont transition as well as Ebron would

Round 2 Odell Beckham Jr LSU WR- Odell could learn from Maclin and potentially be a our NO.1 receiver

Round 3 De'anthony Thomas Oregon RB- He one of the most dangerous players in the draft and Im sure Marty would love to use him in some packages on offense and he could also be a very good return man for us.

Round 3 Donte Moncrief Ole Miss WR- This is a type of guy who could also be a NO.1 receiver and with the WR class being so deep this year we could steal him in the 3rd round

Round 4 Marqueston Huff Wyoming S- This guy is always making tackles I see him rotating with Antonio Allen at SS playing beside TJ our safeties will again be very good like when we had Landry and Bell

Round 5 Jon Halapio Florida OG- Can compete for position battle with Brian Winters, Halapio is an excellent run blocker with good coaching he can be a very solid starter.

Round 6 Antone Exum Virginia Tech CB- He was very good player before his ACL tear and if he is still on the board I think he would be a low risk high reward for us

Round 7- Round 7 is tough for me to say so what I think we do is take the best player on the board at the time and see what happens

SUMMARY

With jets starting off this offseason we are still not where we want to be we showed potential during this season and with more weapons we can be good I think if we follow this blueprint and you guys may disagree we can contend for a championship this upcoming season
