True Verticality

I've been thinking about receivers and the vertical jump and playing around with numbers now that the combine is thru. We talk a lot about winning the jump ball and I hear things like vertical seperation in reference to guys who can jump higher than defenders. We want receivers who are tall with long arms and can jump high. It's a big reason why Stephen Hill was drafted so highly. The ability to out-jump defenders and reach a pass above their outstretched arms is a very valuable thing. It's this ability that allows a 6'5" receiver with 33" arms and a 42.5" vertical jump to catch passes down the field despite being double or triple covered. Those measurables belong to Calvin Johnson and go part of the way to explaining his greatness. Of course that reach is paired with technique and physicality, which explains why a guy like Stephen Hill who has measurables that come close to those numbers hasn't been able to be anywhere near the type of receiver that Johnson is. The athletic ability has to be there for the technique to mean anything tho.

In the process of checking out combine measurements, I realized that there is no measure or analytic available to describe how high a reach a player has in theory when he is stretched out jumping in the air. Ideally, we would just have the raw number from the vertical jump instead of the difference between the jump and the standing reach. What I did was recreate an approximation of this value, which I called the Vertical Score. It is a simple summation of height, arm length and vertical jump into one value. Below, I sorted the first group of wide receivers and tight ends and the second group of defensive backs in descending order. And at the bottom, I added in a few current players for fun and for a reference.

The results are not too surprising considering Mike Evans comes out with the highest score and the one thing about him that has stood out the most is his ability to win in jump ball situations. Of interest tho, are some of the receivers on the shorter side that come out in the top half, such as Davante Adams, Tevin Reese and Odell Beckham to name a few. Also of note are highly regarded receiver prospects like Cody Hoffman, Jarvis Landry and Jared Abbrederis who end up in the bottom half despite for Hoffman at least not lacking height. Of course, there are many ways for receivers to be successful and these numbers do not necessarily reflect game ability accurately when there are so many other factors involved including the fact that receivers rarely jump from a stand-still position. However, this table should give a good indications of a receivers' vertical length or reach.
