Jordan Matthews vs Ole Miss (2013) (via Aaron Aloysius)
2013: 112 for 1477 and 7 TDs.
The clip I attached above are the cut-ups of Matthews against Ole Miss, his best game of the season. And is was probably the most unimpressive 10 catch, 178 yard game I've ever seen. He's got nice hands, I'll give him that. But other than that... what? He's got decent size, but displays zero physicality. He's got sneaky speed, but its all on the back-end; there's no explosiveness about him whatsoever. His routes look round. He doesn't separate. He had a couple nice long catches, but it seemed like the coverage was in his pocket and the QB dropped it in the bucket. If a QB drops it into both of your hands, I expect you to catch it.
One telling stat I found on Stinky Cheese is that he had 56 catches for 771 yards and 6 TDs on first down. Thats half of his production. Seems like he snuck in a ton of catches and yards when the defense was looking for a run. But when the pass is more expected, his production drops off a cliff and his TDs all but disappear.
When I look at Jordan Matthews, I see Reggie Wayne lite. A guy who's slightly more athletic than his college contemporaries, but who' average at best from an athletic standpoint in the NFL. He won't get separation. I also think he'll struggle beating press coverage, he lacks strength to muscle through contact and he lacks burst to separate out of the gate. He'll catch everything that hits his hands, but good luck squeezing a ball through to him while he has a man draped all over him. He's also crap with the ball after that catch; he couldn't make a guy miss to save his momma's life.
Jordan Matthews... pee-ewe.
