Under the Radar Prospect: OT Seantrel Henderson, "The U"

Disclaimer: As Managing Editor of State of the U, SB Nation's University of Miami Blog, I have a slight bias toward UM players.

Perhaps the most controversial and polarizing player on Miami's roster (that is saying something), the past 4 years is Seantrel Henderson.

Back in 2009, the 6'8 345 pound offensive tackle was considered by many the best player of his high school class. Originally committed to USC but switched to UM after the Reggie Bush scandal dropped.

As a true freshman at Miami started 9 games at RT and did some of his best work and was named Freshman All American by several publications. However off season back surgery before his sophomore year, slowed his progress and the following spring he was suspended the first of 3 times on his career for "team violations."

Junior and Senior years was All ACC honorable mention, but considering his immense size and talent, both seasons were considered disappointments.

Leading up to the Senior Bowl, admitted that a large part of his issues was the use of marijuana.

Projects to go somewhere between rounds 3-5 on most mock draft boards.

Strengths: Sub 5 (4.93) 40 which is incredible for a man his size. Equally adept and run and pass blocking when he is on. Excellent hands, capable of delivering a "punch" on both run and pass plays. Down right dominant as a run blocker. Can get out in space on screen plays, bubble screens, etc.. Upside is extremely high.

Weaknesses: Surprisingly inconsistent as a pass protector. Concentration seems to be off at times. Footwork could use some more coaching. Off the field concerns. Health could be a factor with one back surgery already on the books.

Bottom line: Would be ideal insurance for a team with a starter set to hit FA. One year of good coaching and Henderson could step right in as a starter at RT and a back-up at LT. Really is a diamond in the rough. Can also be used as a situational extra TE because of his athleticism and run blocking skill, and has some experience at G as well, so could be at valuable back up at multiple positions.

Henderson is a gamble pick, but because of his upside worth the risk for any team with supplemental picks. (Jets)
