#25 Bishop Sankey, RB, Washington vs BYU '13 (via SportCutups)
2013: 327 for 1870, 20 TDs
Not gonna lie. Sankey doesn't really fit my style of back. I like the big boys for the most part. And after a few cursory looks at his film, I didn't see enough speed to sway me. But that production... that kind of production just couldn't be ignored. So I sat myself down and really watched this kid. Now I like him a lot. I think the name Bishop is appropriate for him. Like the chess piece, he slices and slides and is a master of diagonals.
Bishop is a very slippery runner. He's got great vision and balance, and he has a knack for sliding through tackles when you think he's been swallowed. He not a powerful runner but if you don't wrap him he will not go down. He reminds a lot of Curtis Martin. He's not powerful, yet breaks lots of tackles. He's not explosive, yet he always seems to get the edge. He reminds me very much of Curtis in between the tackles. He doesn't sever limbs with arm ripping power, and he doesn't lower his through contact with goring thrusts. He just spots small slivers to slide through and somehow manages to squirt through what seems like a solid brick wall, gaining 5 yards before anyone can see him. His efficiency of running reminds me a lot of Curtis as well. He has the most unassuming way to steal a quick 7yards while leaving defenders feeling like they made a good stop. He doesn't waste much movement and is very effective between the tackles for a smaller kind of guy. He's very adept at causing misses in tight confines, which is a knack that I believe is a big indicator of future success at the next level. And he's a fantastic fit for a West Coast offense.
When you think of a West Coast running back, you think of a guy like Sankey. He's very efficient between the tackles, yet he's dynamite in the open field, he seems to have good hands and a knack for slipping out of the backfield and making himself available as a check down option. He has a reputation for being tough and durable and a really hard worker (not unlike a guy we used to know). He's very unassuming and very underrated, but he's extremely efficient and could contribute to this offense in a lot of ways. Check mate.
