Potential Jets First Round Draft Picks

The Jets are currently looking disastrous, so why not start considering some young guns that could be wearing Jet Green in 2015?

Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon
Some consider Mariota as a clear first overall pick next year. I would not say he is the obvious top choice right now but he is certainly the frontrunner. Many think of Mariota as a dominant force athletically, with his ability to escape the pocket and comfortably throw on the run. I would say that he is a very mentally strong quarterback and has the ability to read defenses better than anyone else in the draft therefore making his athletic abilities look much better than they really are. He recognizes where the pressure is coming from, and creates a counter attack either with his legs ar with his arm. Mariota, to me seems to be the only guy comfortable under pressure with the exception of Brandon Bridge but his opponents aren't giving him much of a challenge. However, the no. 1 overall pick should have absolutely no question with his arm strength. I see a good arm out of Marcus, but I'm not quite sure I see an unusually strong one, which could be a factor in his overall draft stock. Another problem with him is he gets loose from the pocket far too quickly at times, and this is something that definitely needs to change if he wants to be successful at the next level.

Kevin White, WR, West Virginia
White probably has the most potential in the draft from any position except maybe DeVante Parker. Watching White reminds me of watching a DeAndre Hopkins during his time at Clemson. White is a terrific athlete with great leaping abilities and has the talent of gaining separation along with tremendous muscle definition and size. All this is great, but we don't want another Stephen Hill now do we? I don't think we will with White for he has good, not great hands and has what I have seen extremely good blocking techniques except for a couple of holding calls. The only downside I have with White is he loses focus at times. There are multiple plays per game where White has opportunities to make even bigger than he has been making but gets beat when the coverage is tight and I think its because of his lack of focus. Another thing I've noticed with White is despite his athleticism during routes and straight line speed, he sometimes struggles in space to make guys miss. Overall, I think White would be a terrific fit for the Jets and should be on everyone's radar through the rest of the college season.

Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama
Cooper is probably the most NFL ready receiver in the draft and if you are willing to go a little bit conservative with a top pick, Cooper is the call because he will be giving solid production for any team he goes to if healthy. Cooper, like White, is a terrific athlete with quickness and ability to gain separation and stands relatively tall at 6-1 201 lbs with decent blocking skills. If anything, I believe Cooper is even quicker than White is, especially when he has the ball for he constantly succeeds at making his opponents miss. However, Cooper does not have the softest hands in the world for he drops passes from time to time resembling Marqise Lee a little bit. Unfortunately, his unreliable hands will limit his abilities in the pros and that is why he will never be a pure go-to receiver for any NFL team which is why I would take White over him.

DeVante Parker, WR, Louisville
If you are not a guy that follows the draft on a regular basis, the name DeVante Parker may be unfamiliar to you. You should probably get to know this guy, because he definitely has top 5 potential. The reason why Parker has been relatively under the radar is because of a left foot injury in which I am not aware of the details but it caused him to miss the beginning of the season. Watching Parker reminds me of Mike Evans. Long arms, strong body and hands that can get almost anything no matter the coverage. He is outstanding leaping ability and after the catch skills that make him probably the hardest receiver to cover if the corner is inexperienced. The only potential problem that I have with Parker is his initial burst and acceleration off the line of scrimmage which makes it difficult for him to get open on deep fly routes but makes up for this with his 6-3 209 lb size and soft hands. His straight line speed and acceleration factor, in my mind, keeps him from being an elite receiving prospect that Mike Evans was last year but has unlimited potential.

Others to Consider
Andrus Peat, OT, Stanford
Sammie Coates, WR, Auburn
Jaelen Strong, WR, Arizona State
Devin Funchess, WR/TE, Michigan
La'el Collins, OT, LSU

Just a few thoughts. What rookie do you want in Jet green in 2015?
