Top Head Coaching Candidates

With each performance, it is beginning to look more and more likely that Rex Ryan is a goner. It's been a decent run, but it's time to clean house. Although, I don't think Rex is the only problem he needs to get fired at the end of the year. The other guy on the hot seat is General Manager John Idzik. Idzik had an opportunity this off-season with the assets he had to really improve the team. He blew it and didn't make one solid signing (outside of Decker). If the Jets continue to perform at the level they have, Idzik might also be let go at the end of the year. With this being said, I decided to take a look at just some of the Head Coach candidates:

The Usual Popular Names (The Guys Who Always Get Mentioned):
Jim Harbaugh - Now if Harbaugh's situation in San Francisco is actually as bad as advertised, I would have him #1 on my list of potential head coaches. I'd make him the highest paid coach in the league honestly and give him all the power he wants. I think he's that good of a coach (top 3 in the league in my opinion). The players love him and he has a proven track record of grooming young quarterbacks. However, I just don't know how probable this is. I doubt he leaves, and if he does I think he'll get a massive college offer or he might prefer other teams to us.

Bill Cowher - Cowher's name is also always brought up in terms of head coaching jobs. However, I doubt he comes back to coaching. He seems pretty content with where he is and I think it is time for an offensive mind.

Marty Schottenheimer - Now this has no chance of happening. His name is always brought up, but he's another guy I see staying retired. After how the media and fans treated his son, I doubt he wants any part of New York.

Jon Gruden - He signed that contract with ESPN. Just won't happen. He might only want to return to Oakland.

Mike Holmgren - You get the point. It's not realistic. He has no interest in coaching anymore.

The Flashy Coordinators:

Darrell Bevell - If Idzik stays, I could definitely see this. Was a former QB coach and has done a nice job with Wilson. Seems to be a decent play caller, but I find him overrated. If Harvin is here, I doubt it happens. I have no idea why he used Harvin the way he did in Seattle when he used him differently in Minnesota. My guess is there is tension between the two.

Adam Gase - How much of Denver's great offense is Gase responsible for really though? Peyton obviously commands the offense, but we really don't know how much Gase is helping him. He has the Decker connection. If anything, Gase being a former WR coach, has done a great job grooming young receivers (Decker/Sanders/Thomas/Julius Thomas). It's something to keep an eye on. Hell, Peyton could have possibly helped him out too. Peyton has high praise for him, but it's risky.

Teryl Austin - Who? Yea he's still unknown, but he's the guy coaching the defense up in Detroit this year. He's done an awesome job with that defense and he did a solid job with Baltimore's secondary in their Super Bowl run. Not sure if he has enough experience yet, but he's still someone to keep an eye on. I know no one wants a defense coordinator (I don't either), but being a Jets fan means you have to expect the unexpected.

Pep Hamilton - Actually coached for the Jets a while back. He's done a nice job the past two years with Indy (he has a lot of weapons though). Did a great job with Harbaugh at Stanford, so he probably has similar philosophies. Wouldn't be a bad hire.

Frank Reich - Has quickly moved up due to his work he's done with Rivers in San Diego. He was promoted to offensive coordinator this year and has done wonders. He joined San Diego last year as QB coach and turned Rivers around. Former WR/QB coach with Indianapolis and then with the Cardinals. He's worked with some of the best (Peyton Manning, Reggie Wayne, Larry Fitzgerald). Also has helped guys like Michael Floyd/Pierre Garcon. Dark horse candidate.

The College Guys:

Kevin Sumlin - With Texas A&M's recent struggles, Sumlin might be growing tired. He's well regarded as the best college coach out there and as an offensive "mastermind." There's always been the report that NFL teams are stealing concepts from his offense. We'll see how this unfolds.

Gus Malzahn - He's turned Auburn around. He's an offensive guy.

David Shaw - Another guy that has worked with Harbaugh/Luck. He's another offensive guy. He's done a great job at Stanford.

So what do you guys think? Any names I left off? Who do you guys like? Who would you hate? Let me know.
