I wanted to write this article maybe two weeks ago, but the honest truth is, finding film of Herron is not that easy, based on him playing in the MWC with Wyoming. However I've seen him a couple of times and the film I was able to find helped me fully shape an opinion. Herron for much of his high school career moonlighted as a track star, earning recognition in both sports. After not getting major scholarship offers out of high school, Herron ended up playing his ball at Wyoming.
Projected 40: 4.3-4.4
Herron is a playmaker pure and simple, he is a burner with elite straight line speed. There isn't a defensive back he can't run past in college. Yes you have to consider the competition he was facing, however you also have to consider the calibre of player he was playing with. Was invited to the Senior Bowl and has impressed scouts with several attributes. Shows an ability and willingness to contest balls over the middle. Has good vertical ability despite his height. Soft hands and catches the ball away from his body. Good vision once he gets the ball in his hands and has some dangerous open field moves. Tracks the ball well and can adjust on poorly thrown balls. Straight line speed on vertical routes is very impressive.
Doesn't have the elite size for the position, slender in his frame and could be in trouble if faced with a lot of press coverage at the next level. Hasn't faced elite competition on a regular basis. Mainly used on vertical routes he does need to work on the intricacies of the route tree. He is a receiver who has a lot of ability, but just needs polishing. Doesn't offer a great deal other than effort in blocking.
Herron is a receiver that I really like. I know some of you will be running for the hills when you read speed and needs polish in the same sentence (See Stephen Hill), but there is one major difference. Herron shows the soft hands and the tough mentality to compete over the middle. Personally I think he'll be a 3rd to 5th round selection and I don't think he should be our only receiver, but I would seriously take a look at him. He'll stretch the field, but he can also be used in short passing situations, suited to the west coast offence that we run.
Would I draft him for the Jets?
I would consider it in the 3rd, be very happy with him in the 4th and jump at the opportunity if he was available in the 5th.
