Hey everyone. It seems like the only players the media and the fans can see us taking are Marqise Lee, WR from USC, Jace Amaro, TE from Texas Tech, or Eric Ebron, TE from North Carolina. Now, I'm not here to show strengths and weaknesses. I'm hoping you guys will discuss that among with other ideas in the comments. I'm just here to talk about the different routes you can take with this. Let's take a look. This is all in the perspective of John Idzik.
We have a glaring gap at WR that needs to be fixed immediately, so I'll go with Lee. He has true potential to be a #1 wide receiver in this league. We can maybe take a look at other wide receivers later in the draft since it's not as big a need now. We need to focus on our needs at the tight end position. I was thinking about taking Ebron or Amaro, though Lee is just too enticing to pass up. I could hope that either Ebron, Amaro, Austin Sefarian-Jenkins could maybe make a huge drop to us in the second round, or we could at least trade up, but that's very unlikely. Maybe now I can focus on other positions and look to get a player like CJ Fiedorowicz out of Iowa, Arthur Lynch from Georgia, or even Crockett Gillmore out of Colorado State late. If they produce like I think they will we could have a much better draft than I originally thought. There's also free agency! Jimmy Graham is a no-doubt returnee to the Saints, but Dennis Pitta, although being injured most of the year, could be let go by the Ravens and be a bit cheaper. Brandon Pettigrew and Fred Davis are also great ideas. I could make the team a lot better by doing this. Now this allows me to pursue players of other need in the second round.
We have a big gap at TE, and I like Ebron's big mismatch problem and speed. He reminds me of a mix of Julius Thomas and Jimmy Graham, but let's not think too big yet. Let's take Ebron. Now we need to focus on wide receivers in the second round. That hole is just too big to ignore any longer. We can hope someone like Brandin Cooks, Kelvin Benjamin, or Odell Beckham Jr, who I think could be a big steal, are there. The only WRs I said that I would suspect would fall to our spot are Cooks and Beckham Jr. Maybe even Beckham Jr's teammate Jarvis Landry as well. That would be good! I could also look at Paul Richardson or Brandon Coleman later. In free agency I could look at Eric Decker, Jeremy Maclin, Hakeem Nicks, Golden Tate, James Jones and maybe some other solid vets for our WR spots as well. I would also want a big TE opposite of Ebron, so Brandon Pettigrew could be the guy. Now Geno has a huge receiver who can bail him out and give him a nice speedy mismatch target when he needs it.
We have a big gap at TE, and I like Amaro's size and his ability to keep moving. He reminds me of a mix of Rob Gronkowski and Julius Thomas, but let's not think too big yet. With Amaro taking away the middle and the flats with his size, I want a guy who the defense needs to focus on down the field. If I'm really focused on speedy guys I could look at some solid vet options such as Golden Tate, Dexter McCluster, Jacoby Jones, or Julian Edelman in FA. I'd also want a speedy TE across of Amaro, so Dennis Pitta, Jermichael Finley, Fred Davis, and Garret Graham could all be targets. Now Geno has a huge receiver who can bail him out and give him a nice big target when he needs it.
