I have been reading all the articles and mocks talking about Johnny Manziel, and whether or not the Jets should draft him if given the opportunity, and everything else surrounding this upcoming draft that we are going to have. My number 1 issue with this is the same issue i have been stating all along, which is without play makers on the outside it doesn't matter who you bring in at QB (of who is available) because we are not winning the Super Bowl with Jeremy Kerley, Stephen Hill, Jeff Cumberland, and David Nelson.
I understand Drafting a QB in the first round does not preclude us from adding skill position talent on the outside, but it does take our most valuable resource for the entire offseason and use it on a piece that will probably be only a marginal upgrade at best.
Everyone talks about the QB's the past 6 years coming out and lighting up the world, but how many playoff games have they won. Ryan 1, Newton 0, Luck 1, Rg3 0, Dalton 0, etc... (this is off the top of my head if i am forgetting something please just let me know) These guys are coming in and performing this way because they have talent at the skill positions, and because of the NFL's aversion to playing real defense anymore. Yes Geno struggled through 2/3rds of the year but the light i feel did turn on towards the end enough to at least warrant he gets another chance with some real players.
Now if you told me we went out and signed Eric Decker, Jimmy Graham, and Jeremy Maclin in free agency i think i would be ok with the idea of drafting a QB round 1, and honestly i would still use that pick on a safety or line backer, or O-line, or some other area of direct need instead of a QB, but at least in this situation it would be palatable.
My last thought is that even if we had the #1 overall pick right now (via trade not going back and saying we went 2-14) i would draft Sammy Watkins with that pick or trade down and let someone else take the QB.
Please i want to know how everyone else feels about this i am curious if i am completely off my rocker with this opinion.
