... As NFL fans prepare for the 2013-2014 season, most are filled with hope of winning. Teams, coaches, players and fans alike are seeking a win that will hopefully set the tone on the season ahead. The Jets get their first look at several rookies who will see plenty of action today. The Jets may start as many as four rookies from GM J. Idzik's first draft, with all eyes on 2nd round selection G. Smith at QB.
It was not that long ago when M. Sanchez was in this spot, starting his career with three straight wins. The USC product had a good running game and a strong defense. Sanchez made plays when he had to as the Jets made the post season in his first two seasons, winning two road playoff games each year. As the team imploded around him , Sanchez crumbled as well. Sanchez had regressed in 8-8 and 6-10 seasons which led to the needed change at GM, but T-Bomb wasn't turning the ball over at an alarming rate.
Today brings Tampa Bay to the Jets turf as well as a familiar player. The Jets traded their best player to the Buc's rather than deal with him after this season. Revis was a game changer and the best CB in the NFL, but also a front office nightmare when it came to contract negotiations. Geno Smith was quoted as saying he hadn't studied Revis? Revis was quoted as saying he did study Smith. I am hoping this may signal they do not plan on testing Revis, but I doubt that.
The Jets best chance to win this game was injured in a meaningless game. It was obvious Sanchez had won the QB competition but Rex opted to insert him into a meaningless game. G. Smith will get the start and lets hope he has grown a bunch since facing the Giants in pre-season. He doesn't have to win this game by putting the team on his back, just don't lose it. The Buc's have problems at QB too, J. Freeman lost his captain designation signalling the team has lost faith in him much like the Jets had with Sanchez.
So I feel the best chance to win today's game will depend on which team can establish the run, combined with a strong display by the defense(Ground & Pound). Yes the Jets must pass the ball and they will. I look forward to "Marty Ball" as he has developed some good NFL QB's. Today I doubt he opens up the playbook but keep it simple. This game could be decided by Special Teams? Lets all wish Geno the best today, and hopefully he plays up to his ability. I am excited to see the look of the faster front seven, the reworked O-Line and secondary as well as the new RB's/WR's and TE's.
I thought the following poll would be fun:
