I have no idea where Mike Goodson is right now, or when he's coming back. But it woulda been pretty cool if he was here. We never got to see him live, but the general consensus on him is that he was an explosive dude. His 40 time at the combine (4.46) seems to verify that. As does the tape. We've also seen, first hand, how explosive Joe McMigrain can be when he gets in the open field. There were actually some whispers during OTAs of us running some two-back sets. And I think we would have been able to do some wicked things with those two out of that formation.
What I really like about Marty Mornhinweg so far is his apparent ability to scheme guys open into large spaces. It seems like every option on every route has the opportunity to turn into a big play if run properly. And based on some of his interviews, he seems to be big on finding a player's strength and figuring out how to use it. I have no doubt that getting two explosive players like Goodson and McKnight onto the field at the same time is something that Marty would have tried to do.
What I really like about the idea is the way you can use Jeff Cumberland to distort and exaggerate spacing. Cumberland is a converted WR that now plays TE. He has the size, speed and the route-running prowess to be a threat as a pass catcher; and being a former receiver, he's comfortable in situations where he's flexed out away from scrimmage. If you have Hill out wide and Gates in the slot for instance, and then have Cumberland flexed out wide on the other side, the defense will be stretched out. Assuming the defense is in a base package due the TE/2RB look, there will immediately be a one-on-one somewhere outside that might be exploitable. If not, we can create further distortions in the defense using our speedy RBs. You could motion one out into space and try to get a LB matched up with him on a route. You can run misdirectional traps on the interior and catch a LB over-pursuing and pop a big run. You can set up a screen. There would be a million ways to create opportunities to get these guys into space.
Imagine adding a very mobile Geno into that mix with some designed roll-outs and edge attacks...? Shugga.
