This is my very early prediction at who makes the roster on opening day:
Pretty standard here. I don't agree, but I do think Sanchez opens the regular season staring at old buddy Revis from behind center.
The Jets like to go heavy at RB, and for some reason keep their subpar fullbacks like Lex and the Terminated. I think Bohanon beats out Lex, though I'm not very sure on that one.
Hill and Kerley are the only real locks here. Beyond that, I think Obamanu's ST ability gets him on the team, Gates's speed and KR ability gets him an edge on a roster spot, and Davis as a back end potential player but that's a major shot in the dark.
Effing Soldier and Cumberland are on solid ground. It seems like the team really wants this Hayden Smith thing to work, so I think he's pushed onto the roster whether or not he deserves it.
Brick, Mangold, Colon are no brainers. Howard is also pretty much a lock. Winters is probably a lock because he was a 3rd round pick. Beyond that is murky. I think Peterman not only makes the team but breaks camp as the starter, though he could just as easily not make the cut. Craziness aside, I say Oday makes it with his ability to fill in at RT and the guard spots. Never say die Schlauderaff makes the roster by virtue of being basically the only guy who can fill in at C in case Mangold gets hurt (knock on wood). Landolt is basically my 53rd guy, but can work as a swing tackle I guess. Notice the glaring omission here of big Vlad, who I think is finally done as a Jet.
Total Offense: 25
Mo, Rich, and Ellis are locks. I'm pretty sure Garay makes it. He's huge, but I think his burst off the snap means he can play along the 3-4 DL as the 3 tech and possibly the 5. Harrison is probably the primary back up base package nose tackle if Ellis goes down. Junior Aumavae has a cool name and he's basically my 52nd guy, but he does have a big body like Devito.
Harris, Barnes, Coples, Davis are shoo-ins, with Coples also probably playing a significant amount on the DL. Unfortunately, I think Rex won't be able to stop himself from having Calvin Pace on this roster, probably as a starter while Barnes acts as a situational pass rush guy. Ricky Sapp is another pass rush guy who unfortunately has yet to show he can rush the passer in the pros, but he has tools and is healthy. Mauga and Nick Bellore are two more players who the Jets can't seem to replace with better players, and I don't see much different on this roster now. McIntyre is the true definition of a JAG, but he hustles and can play specials.
Obviously, Cro, Wilson, and Dee Milly will be on the team. After that it's a bit of a toss-up; Aaron Berry probably has the most skins on the wall by virtue of being a former starter (albeit a mediocre one), and Darrin Walls has the most upside with his size and speed. I think Walls should be a candidate to play a hybrid CB/S role to fill in where needed, but I doubt that happens. Isaiah Trufant is a scappy fighter who doesn't have a ton of upside anymore, but he's a reliable slot corner when healthy and could fit as the primary backup at the nickel or dime spot.
Landry is the only guy I would say should be a lock, as he's really the only one that we know for sure is NFL caliber. NFL sophomore/mediocre rapper Josh Bush at this point looks to me like the projected starter, as his skills as an undersized FS/former corner fit better next to box safety Landry. Fellow 2012 late round pick Antonio Allen looks to be a back up for Landry, considering he does the same exact thing as Landry except worse. Miles is a UDFA who is competing with former Eagles 2nd round bust Jaiquawn Jarrett for the final spot, and I like the unknown quantity of the scrappy Miles over the known suckiness of Jarrett (though, I don't know if I like Bush much more than Jarrett either). The Jets are in dire need of a legit vet talent here.
Total Defense: 25
K (1): Nick Folk
I can't be mad at the Jets, they keep trying to bring in competition for Folk, it's just that the competition winds up sucking more than Folk does. That said, Folk at least wasn't terrible last year, Folk was 21-27 but 3 of his kicks were blocked, so really he was 21-24 and 3 "who knows, the team let the kicker down". He was 8-11 from 40+ yards out, so there's some security that he can make kicks from distance. However... the Jets need to find better IMO because Folk is meh.
P (1): Robert Malone
Malone did a credible, albeit pretty overrated job last year (19th in average, 24th in net average), and the Jets haven't brought in a real threat so it looks like Malone will keep his job again this year.
LS (1): Tanner Pardum
Hasn't really screwed up much and is still young so, yeah. Rock on Tanner. Keep snapping em.
