At first glance, it didn't make much sense to me to have Coples move outside. As we all know, Rex runs a hybrid 3-4 defense with a lot of 4-3 and 46 looks mixed in. I'm wondering if this is hinting towards a shift to a 4-3 under heavy defense with Coples playing the Leo position. The 4-3 under is very similar to the 3-4 as there are typically 3 full time down linemen and one rusher linebacker who has a lot of freedom to roam and cause pressure. The 49ers use this look a lot as well as the Seahawks. Typically the Leo is a quick, athletic, “tweener” type in the mold of Bruce Irvin in Seattle, but maybe Rex will get creative and use a lot of the same principles to apply pressure. What do you think?
