Now I know that Revis has been getting plenty of media coverage lately. There is talk of Revis being traded for just one first round pick (among other later round picks), if that. Us Jets fans know, that if healthy, Revis is worth MUCH more than that. He's the best Cornerback in the league, and possibly already the best ever.
However, would Revis Island be able to hold his own, one-on-one, against the best receiver ever? If Revis were to line up against Jerry Rice all day long, what would the stats look like? Would Revis completely shut him down, like he has done to every other receiver he has faced? Or would Rice dominate him, much like he did to everyone else back in the day, including Deion Sanders from time to time. Would the results end up somewhere in the middle? What would be the difference in results if Jerry Rice and Darrelle Revis were matching up today, rather than back in the day. Take into account that Jerry Rice has Joe Montana throwing him the ball, so Revis has to not only compete against one GOAT but two. Something has to give.
I think if Revis were to match up against Jerry Rice back in the day, he would absolutely shut him down.
Jerry Rice's statline would look something like this: 2 catches for 29 yards. Revis gets a pick.
In today's game, with the rules making it easier for Rice and Montana, I think Revis has a bad "Revis" game but still holds his own, putting up a great "everybody else" game.
Jerry Rice's statline would look something like this: 5 catches for 68 yards, 1 TD. Revis still gets a pick.
I think Revis wins the matchup both times.
What do you think?
