A season of grading Jets NFL prospects and the actual grades

I’ve found that nothing focuses your attention on a college player’s skill set like having to give him a grade every week. My first year in doing this demonstrates how a player’s performance can change week to week depending on the level of competition. For example, when I first graded Arkansas’s defensive end Chris Smith, he was dominant in a game against Rutgers and earned an A. Indeed Smith was leading the nation in sacks until Arkansas began playing SEC teams. Then he more or less disappeared, and when he played LSU in the final game he was practically invisible and I gave him a C. In today’s up tempo passing game it is difficult to gauge defensive tackles because the speed of the passing game neutralizes them. You’ll notice that because of that I handed out low grades to defensive tackles, particularly early in the season, to such players as Minnesota’s Ra’Shede Hageman and Tennessee’s Daniel McCullers.

Some of you may have noticed that in yesterday’s 3- round mock I have the Jets selecting North Carolina tight end Eric Ebron in the first round. I gave Ebron B’s so his selection did not reflect who I thought they should draft first but rather who I think they will draft, not because he is a tight end, but because he is a tall, physical receiver. I personally believe that Ole Miss receiver Donte Moncrief regressed this season but again NFL teams love his size, and I believe the Jets do too. Finally, I have the Jets taking Mizzou cornerback E.J. Gaines in the second round. Gaines was one of those prospects down a bit in rounds projections but on the watch list due to his 4.44 40 speed when the season began, fifth fastest of all cornerback prospects. Then he simply had a fabulous season, both as a shut- down cover guy, such as his blanketing of Texas A&M’s Mike Evans at season’s ends, and was leading the SEC in interceptions before a mid- season injury. In my opinion, he was the best cornerback in the SEC period, this season.

Obviously, Florida’s trio of Purfroy, Roberson, and Watkins have enormous upside but were inconsistent. I found Luchiez Purfroy in particular difficult to grade because he would get lost in coverage one minute then win the game with an interception or fumble recovery the next.

Before this season began my Jets wish did include Moncrief, OT Taylor Lewan of Michigan, TE Colt Lyerla of Oregon, WR Devin Street of Pitt, OG Brandon Thomas of Clemson, CB Deion Belue of Alabama and linebacker Junior Onyyeali of Arizona State. After a season of grading I would take none of them.

Izad has done a good job of bringing in depth on the OL so I think we really have to go all out with receivers and the secondary. I think Geno will be okay in the long run. It’s looking more and more like Rex will not be back and I’m guessing we’re getting an offensive minded coach, maybe one of the two Gruden brothers, Jay or John. Here were my grades preceded by a grading explanation:

About my grading system--------- A+= a dominating performance A= Outstanding performance B=Average and what is expected of a pro prospect C=A nominal performance C-Totally marginalized in the game NG- Not enough plays to grade.
