Getting Healthy at the Right Time

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

For the New York Jets, the bye week could not have come at a better time. For the first time in quite a while, the team will be healthy and relatively close to the way GM John Idzik imagined it during the offseason as we will see for the rest of the season. Among the returning players are Santonio Holmes, Kellen Winslow, Jeff Cumberland, and other recently injured players such as Antonio Allen and Willie Colon will have had time to heal. Obviously, some players such as Mike Goodson and Antwan Barnes will not return this season, but for the most part, the team is looking healthy and ready to go.

So what does this mean? Theoretically, a much more dynamic offense to match the high intensity defense. For the past few weeks, the offense has not been able to mix things up as well as they have in the past. The last few weeks have seen the offense return to almost 2009-esque predictability in terms of an emphasis on the ground game. As they did against the Atlanta Falcons, the Jets will be able to run more formations to confuse the defense.

I'm especially interested to see if the team returns to the high-flying offense that we saw last time they played the Buffalo Bills, especially with Holmes healthy again. Although the team does not have Jeremy Kerley for another few weeks, Stephen Hill, Holmes, Winslow, and Cumberland, to go with David Nelson and Greg Salas, offer a dynamic passing attack. Will Marty Mornhinweg continue to roll with the ground game, or will he return to putting the team on Geno Smith's back, as he did to start the season off?

For a team in the playoffs, or one on the edge as the Jets are, the most important thing is to stay healthy. It's often the healthiest team that wins it all, as the NFL season is a battle of attrition. It's a marathon, not a sprint. Fortunately, the Jets are getting healthy at the right time.
