I know we are all reveling in the Jet's win over the Saints at Met Life today, and personally I am very happy with the progress of the team, especially the defense. Geno did a good job as a game manager and the running game was unreal.
But the news coming out of Miami is disturbing in that it takes the cover off hazing of rookies in the NFL. I realize that it is at the beginning of the investigation, but there seems to be a lot of evidence of what is going on. For one thing I am not surprised that Richie Incognito is involved, as he has shown himself as a extremely dirty player in a violent sport. He had a bad reputation from college and was kicked out of Nebraska and he brought that behavior with him to Miami.
It must be a serious situation for it to affect Jonathan Martin to the point of having to leave the team because he was afraid of retaliation from Incognito and other veteran players. And it seems to revolve around rookies being hit up for significant amounts of money for payment of meals and other entertainment-related situations.
The latest news is that the NFL is going to seriously investigate these charges, despite the statements by the Dolphins management that there is nothing to the whole thing. It shows to me that the coaching staff has a serious a lack of knowledge of what's going on in their own locker room. But if they were aware of it it shows a deeper problem. I don't think Martin should be taken to task for his coming forward to bring this to public attention and it must be very hard for him to be thought of by some people as weak in the macho culture of the NFL.
I hope the real truth of what's been going on comes out and the people responsible are dealt with, whether they are players or management because it would give the NFL a real black eye. With the increasing lack of maturity of the players coming out of the college ranks this type of behavior could lead to other serious problems. Let's hope that this is nipped in the bud now.
I have not heard of anything like this with the Jets because if there were any hints of it the New york sports reporting vultures would be on it like fresh carrion.
