Mark Sanchez was scheduled to undergo season ending shoulder surgery today, performed by Dr. James Andrews. His rehabilitation efforts ultimately plateaued, necessitating this surgery.
Between this, and Geno Smith's very impressive performance against the Falcons last night, we have now almost assuredly seen the definitive end of the Mark Sanchez era. His large contract combined with poor performance and seeming inability to raise his game means he in all likelihood will be cut at the end of this season.
While Sanchez's performance the last two seasons was poor, I will choose to remember him as one of the faces of the back to back AFC Championship Game appearances. Although debate will no doubt continue over "why" he never developed, with fingers pointing to bad coaching, lack of weapons around him, or his own failings, at the end he did not develop and now we have Geno Smith to root for, and hopefully see develop and build towards becoming the franchise QB Sanchez never was.
I will not remember butt fumbles or passes to D-linemen. I will remember two very exciting playoff runs.
