As you may be able to deduce from the title, this FanPost will detail the merits of bringing back Joe McKnight. Joe is one of many recent USC products who has not been able to replicate his college success in the NFL. He was named as the kick returner for the 2011 All-Pro team, but has not seen sustained success at running back.
At 3-3, the Jets are at a crossroads: they can either go on a winning streak and be a playoff contender, falter and enter the Teddy Bridgewater sweepstakes, or hover around .500 for the rest of the season. Adding someone like Joe McKnight, who can change the outlook of a game at any time, could be the spark that the Jets need. Joe has the potential to be a huge contributor on both offense and special teams.
During the short time Mike Goodson was on the field this season, the Jets' offense was much more dangerous. Goodson provided a big play threat out of the backfield that opposing defenses had to account for on every play. Not only did this direct attention away from Geno Smith's other targets, but Goodson also racked up four first downs on just nine touches. Bilal Powell and Chris Ivory are both solid, but neither possesses the kind of breakaway speed that Joe McKnight could provide. Let me emphasize that I do not expect Joe McKnight to revive his career and become an every-down back. However, it is not unreasonable to expect him to contribute at the same level as Mike Goodson.
So far Jets' kickoff return unit has been atrocious this year. Say what you want about all of the touchbacks, the departure of special teams guru, Mike Westhoff, or the overemphasis of the return man, but this unit needs help. The recent addition of Josh Cribbs may lessen the potential impact of Joe McKnight in the return game, but I can't be the only one who has seen Joe's great returns. Joe has a knack for finding the right hole, not to mention the speed and elusiveness to take it to the house.Joe, if by some miracle you're reading this, please get your act together and tell your agent to get to work. You could really make a major impact as a Jet.
