I was really getting annoyed yesterday listening to the pre-game shows talking about how Rex has become a favorite of Idzik and will most likely get his contract extension to coach next year. I couldn't help but say, really? He was 2-2 to start the first quarter of the season (and 4 games does not make a season). He then got his team to 3-2 by winning a tough game on the road in Atlanta (who are considered a good team) but yet only had a 1-3 record at the time.
The defense, which Rex has taken the reins of once again, is good. Solid against the run, decent against the pass and for once seems to be getting pressure on the quarterback without having to throw and elaborate blitz package. However, there have been a few calls that opposing teams have completely blown up our defense along with the fact that they are not getting the turnovers we need to help out the offense.
Speaking of the offense, it is better, mainly because they got a legitimate OC and not some coach who has never been a coordinator. However, we do have a rookie qb (who is better than our previous qb ) but is showing he is prone to rookie mistakes. We added a few offensive weapons, but even they have had problems getting on the field, whether it be league discipline or injury (but injuries are part of the game).
Over these next 11 games, Rex is going to have to show that he deserves a new contract! A coach is as good as how well he does with the players he has to work with. This team did not have a lot of depth to start this year. As for injuries, every NFL team has to deal with those. He better find a way to sure up the defense and hope MM can get his offense to play consistently, because this season could get out of hand real quick.
I will root for him and this team but if we finish this year as lethargically as we did last season. Rex will not deserve to come back.
