Lately analysts and spectators have been creating mock drafts projecting the Jets picking a pass rusher. A majority of outside sources say Barkevious Mingo (6'5'' 240 lbs DE, LSU) will be gang-green's guy, while some people are pointing towards Jarvis Jones (6'3'' 230 241 lbs LB, Georgia). Both are top notch prospects who offer stability on the rush.
Mingo is a lengthy defender who can play a stand-up role. He has the length, but at 240 he may struggle as a traditional d-end. Mingo is fast off the edge (4.57 40yd) and instinctive. He was a highly touted prep player who has proven his worth. He relies on his physicality and athleticism to make plays. His technique is not top notch. His numbers weren't eye popping (38 tackles, 4.5 sacks), but he will rely on his physical power to make a draft impact. Some say it would have been beneficial for Mingo to stay one more year in college and fine tune his game.
Mingo is a raw talent with upside. His power is surprising given his 240 lb frame. He is explosive off the line and has fairly quick hands. He has a strong spin move that is refined. He is a pure hybrid player, which has become a trend in the NFL.
Jarvis Jones has been intriguing since he entered college football. The Georgia native originally starred at USC and saw playing time. Jones was not cleared by USC doctors and sat the 2010 season out. He returned home to Georgia and became a force. He led the SEC in sacks with his fierce pass rush. He earned All-American accolades and was a Butkus finalist.
Jones can play the run with tenacity and force. He has fairly decent coverage skills as well. He can play an outside role as well as inside. He needs to disengage more with his hands on blocks, however he jams tight ends well. His medical history will come into effect during the draft process.
Overall, Jones seems to be a complete player who is coming off a monster season. He has adequate size and speed, but recently top notch pass rushers don't last long on the draft board. If he's available for the Jets early they should highly consider drafting the former Bulldog star. Mingo is a great prospect, but I feel that Jones has more upside.
Sound-off: Who do you prefer and why? Any other options or late round pass rush steals?
