The Jets were awful this year. They were bad in 2011. They were good in 2010. They were mediocre in 2009. Through Rex's four years of coaching, he has accrued a 34-30 record with two AFC championship appearances. 6-10 is never good. But a 6-10 record was better than the talent the Jets had. The talent on this team resembled a 3-13 team. The offense was devoid of playmakers, had a broken quarterback, and a clueless coordinator. The defense lost its best playmakers, got older, and was still old. Special Teams was just a mess. So how did we even reach six wins? How did we have a mediocre 2009 team be a half away from the superbowl? A bad 2011 team a game from the playoffs? Simply because, Rex made this team the whole greater than the sum of its parts.
I am not Rex Ryan's biggest fan. I do not like the way he brashly guarantees things. I do not like him being over loyal to players. I definitely do not like him saying "Sanchez gives us the best chance to win this week". I like Rex Ryan because I believe he gives us the best chance to win. I believe the defense is top ten year in and year out because of Rex, not the defensive talent. You may argue Rex doesn't help with offense but who could turn that unit successful? A unit that had no pro-bowlers at any skill positions.
Maybe it'll be Rex's time to go, maybe even by next week depending on a new GM's decision. But I do know that with a poorly constructed team he squeezed every win he could of out a team that frankly, just wasn't that good.
