Why the Jets should go back to Eric Mangini's Draft Strategy

Let's face it Eric Mangini fans (and I'm sure there are few and even fewer amongst those who played for him) Eric Mangini was terrible with his players, his desire to be stiff, pure "football" coach made it look as if he was trying to mirror his mentor Bill Billichick rather than build his own reputation in coaching. He went to the extreme of bringing a discipline to whatever teams he coached for, including one incident where he fined a Cleveland player over $1000 for not paying for a $3 Water Bottle. Although his approach to coaching failed his idea of a disciplined team is a very good idea.

The news praises Mangini for choosing exellent talent in draft picks such as Nick Mangold, Darrelle Revis, and D'Brickishaw Ferguson, although these were excellent picks Mangini didn't pick them just for their talent. Mangini's core belief is to draft players and pick up Free Agents who will be leaders in the locker room and push their teammates be competetive even if they don't have the initial drive to. If you don't have good players but you have leaders who will push them to go that extra mile to make their team win you will eventually build a very good team. This is why Rex Ryan had the success he did during 2009 and 2010 he had a good team that was great because they pushed each other, the Problem with todays team is that there are very few players who have the leadership abilities of some of our older players.

The problem with the Rex Ryan Era is that we have barely picked up Free Agents or Draft Picks who are leaders. I could see Mo Wilkerson developing into a leader in the future and Mike Devito is a leader right now but that's about it in terms of leadership picked up from 2009-2012.

Who do I hope the Jets draft in 2013? My pick is Manti Te'o although many will consider him a luxury pick (and also the fact that he did terribly in the BCS championship) he is a natural born leader, something I don't really see in most of the first round picks I've seen people writing scouting reports for.

So in Conclusion Jets Fans I urge you when looking for players in the draft I urge that you not only consider talent but leadership ability because not only does talent get depleted in the locker room but leadership does too.
